Rain before the start for the second year running made for some fast times in Wrekinsport CC’s 25, Round 7 of the SB Sports Injuries Series as Tomos Hales took a strong win despite deliberately conserving his strength for the next evening’s Shropshire Championship 25 and two personal bests were set. Starting at Crudgington, riders first headed south to Shawbirch before a long trek north to Espley island and a fast spin down the Hodnet bypass to turn and retrace to Waters Upton. Hales took the maximum 26 points available in this bonus point round due to being the longest distance in the 2023 SB Series, extending his lead at the top of the Series to a comfortable 32 points as he posted 55 minutes 36 seconds on an overcast evening. Understandably with the Championship 25 in his mind he wasn’t quite going ‘full gas’, but took the win by 2:36 from Wrekinsport team mate Phil Roberts, another rider with one eye on the big prize 24 hours later. Hales stated: ”The Wrekinsport 25 Mile went well, luckily the rain stopped before the start. With another 25 mile event the next day I tried to hold some back. I was happy to take the win; and thanks to the Wrekinsport team for organising the event”.

Roberts rose to sixth spot in the SB Standings thanks to taking runner-up spot with a personal best 58:12, having had the benefit of SB Junior Series leader Ben Southgate starting a minute in front. As seems traditional in Wrekinsport club events after Roberts overtook him Southgate did what he seems to do best and put a huge spurt on towards the finish to get a flagging Roberts back, just un-lapping himself to finish three seconds ahead on the road in 59:09. This was Roberts’ longest time trial of the year, and understandably it took its toll towards the end with the effort expended: He commented: “What looked like it was going to be a damp evening turned out to be fast conditions. I had a lovely carrot to chase down in Ben, and pushed hard all the way to a 25 personal best. I have only been doing 10 mile time trials this year, so to push on for a 25 PB was a nice personal milestone. Great to see so many Wrekinsport members brave both the weather and the long course. A huge thanks to the marshals as well, there were lots out there giving great support at each junction”.

Southgate opened up his Junior Series lead to a huge 88 points thanks to taking third overall, and was the final rider to beat the magic 25mph/60 minute mark – with James Ingram agonisingly missing out after finishing in exactly an hour. Southgate has had to put studying first recently so has had limited chances to train, so was pleased with his effort given the circumstances, commenting: “It went rather well considering the lack of training from my GCSE’s, thankfully they are over now so solid training ahead”.

In the SB Veterans Series the win was taken by Ashley Kirkham in +1:07 thanks to a huge personal best Actual time of 1 hour six minutes exactly. This is the first time Kirkham has beaten his Veteran’s Standard at the distance, and he took advantage of the fast conditions to lop over seven minutes off his previous best, a huge achievement. He stated: “Pre-race conditions had initially made me regret signing up, but once I got going enjoyed it. 10 miles in my numbers were telling me I was going a bit too hard, but I felt good so decided to hang in as long as I could. Another 15 miles later and I still felt good and finished with a 7 minute+ personal best”.

Ben Southgate headed to the top of the Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport following Round 10. The 16 year-old was outpaced by 11 seconds by visiting rider James Gibney of West Midlands Police who took the Overall win in 22 minutes 50 seconds, but scored the maximum six points on offer for Wrekinsport riders in a close tussle with Phil Roberts. Southgate posted a fine 23:01 to push Roberts out by three seconds and overtook Tomos Hales by two points at the head of the table on an overcast evening that saw the return of a hampering wind missing from recent editions.

In the Road Bike Series there was a first entry from Deb Hutson-Lumb who took both the win in that competition and the Women’s Series too with a fine 26:32, with Mollie Croxon extending her lead at the top of the Women’s standings to 13 points. The close battle between Ellott Wills and David Seager at the top of the Road Bike Series saw Wills get the better of things this time by a narrow five seconds after crossing the line in 27:20, taking over sole lead at the top of the table by just one point.

    Known personal bests in bold

It was a close call for victory in Round 9 of the Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport as the top two were separated by just two seconds. It was great to see RAF CA’s Dan Watts back in flying form after time away as he made immediate inroads by taking the win in 21 minutes 20 seconds, pushing out Tomos Hales who took the honours for the promoting club. Watts took advantage of continuing great conditions, putting in a solid charge for the line showing full commitment. Hales knew he was in for a challenge and looked on sparkling form, but had to settle for the runner-up spot on the night. He still took the maximum six points on offer for Wrekinsport riders, stretching his lead at the top of the Decathlon standings to four points over Ben Southgate.

The fine conditions were amply demonstrated with three riders recording personal bests on the night, including third-place Phil Roberts who stopped the watch on 22:26. Other bests came from Paul Ducommun in 27:45; and Mollie Croxon who beat the magical 20mph benchmark for the first time with 29:51, stretching her lead at the top of the Women’s Series to 14 points as a result.

In the Road Bike Series first time entrant in this Series Ben Wood took a fine win in 24:21, with visiting Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ rider Alvydas Janusauskas just eight seconds off the pace. The battle at the top between Elliott Wills and David Seager continues, with the pair tying on 34 points at the top after Wills got the better of things this week by 28 seconds after finishing in 26:28 in a switcheroo contest that has seen each better the other three times in their straight head-to-head battles.

As perfect an evening as riders could wish for saw five riders set personal best times in Round 8 of The Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport – including 16 year-old winner Ben Southgate who powered around the course in 22 minutes 26 minutes to take a maiden victory by six seconds. Southgate sliced a huge 1:22 off his Round 7 time showing the superb conditions and closed in on Tomos Hales’ Decathlon Series lead, narrowing it to two points after pushing out Phil Roberts to the runner-up spot in 22:32. Wrekinsport took all the podium steps with Rich Smith also narrowing the gap at the top taking third in 23:20, 14 seconds ahead of another personal best setter Ben Wood.

In the Road Bike Series regular Series visitor Hamish Maclean of Musselburgh RCC took a big win by 2:02 with a strong equal 5th spot on 23:47, with Dave Moore taking the maximum six points on offer with a solid 25:49, and determined to make waves in the head-to-head battle between Elliott Wills and David Seager at the top of this Series. This week Wills got the best of the tussle with 26:39, 17 seconds to the good and narrowing Seager’s lead once again to a solitary point.

In the Women’s Series there was a first appearance of Victoria Doran, just breaking the 20mph ‘evens’ benchmark with 29:58; with Series leader Mollie Croxon 19 seconds back.

A blisteringly fast evening saw Tim Beardmore take the win in Round 7 of The Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport. The Bridgnorth CC rider took advantage of favourable winds to record a great time of 21 minutes 17 seconds churning his giant 62-tooth chain ring, pushing out Tomos Hales by 15 seconds. Hales stretched his lead at the top of the Decathlon Series standings to eight points with his nearest club mate taking the final podium slot as Alex Leek made his first appearance of the season to finish in 23:05, pushing out Phil Roberts by eight seconds.

There was a good turnout of six riders for the Road Bike Series with Chairman Dave Moore taking the win on his single speed bike in 26:34, pushing Road Bike Series leader David Seager into runner-up spot. Seager is involved in a terrific battle at the top of the standings with Elliott Wills, just getting the better of him by five seconds after stopping the watch on 27:20 to double his lead to a tight two points.

In the Women’s Series Deb-Hutson-Lumb continues to make inroads into Mollie Croxon’s lead after just being caught by Beardmore on the finish line with an impressive 24:17, moving her to three points behind Croxon.
