Wrekinsport CC 10 supported by Nova Raiders

Last minute road works saw a late course and event change for Round 6 of the SB Sports Injuries Series as Nova Raiders combined their 10 with Wrekinsport CC - but it didn't stop some red hot competition on a glorious evening. Top of the pile was SCCA Private Member Matt Garthwaite, elevating himself into joint top spot in the Series thanks to a fabulous effort of 20 minutes 34 seconds - though he knew he had a fight on his hands with Dan Watts and Luke Pollard also entering.

Garthwaite revealed: "My heart sank when I saw Dan and Luke at sign on as I knew it was going to be a tough night out. My heckling at Dan failed to deliver results, so I had to push hard on what turned out to be a night of favourable conditions. Fair play to him for doing his time when stuck in a 55x11".

Watts' gears had indeed jammed on the very biggest cog, but that seemed to do him no harm as he fought furiously to get to the finish line. The extra effort required to push that massive gear saw Watts come home just one second ahead of Pollard in 21:08 - and the team mates enjoyed the chance to josh each other post race. Watts stated: "It was a good evening for racing, happy to just pip team mate Luke to get those bragging rights for our next few training rides! The ride of the evening went to Charlotte Chapman, super quick on a tough course, fair play". Pollard meanwhile took the ribbing with good nature, adding: "I enjoyed listening to a gloating Dan on the ride home. A prime example of every second counts, looks like the beers are on me"!

Watts' comments about Charlotte Chapman were well placed as she rode to an excellent victory in the Women's race of 1:18 over Nova Raiders' team mate Deb Hutson-Lumb in a fine 23:25 - a strong 9th Overall from a field of 42. Chapman was delighted with her efforts, increasing her lead in the SB Women's Series in the process with mother Jane her closest rival. Charlotte commented: "I was very happy with that, my legs felt good. It was a lovely night for it and I actually kind of had fun! Very, very pleased to sneak into the Top 10 overall as well. Great support and marshalling on the course, and as always thanks to everyone who gave up their time so we could race".

Hutson-Lumb meanwhile wasn't just runner-up in the Women's race with a fine 24:43, she also took the same place in the Veteran's race too just three seconds behind Wrekinsport's Chris Halford in +4:26. That performance didn't come free however as Hutson-Lumb suffered towards the end: "My second solo 10 after rather too many years away from the sport - and I'm sure it's more fun than I remember! I'm still not getting the pacing right as my legs went on strike for a while at eight miles, but I'm pleased with my time. A big thanks to Wrekinsport for enabling R6 to go ahead when there were road works on the original planned course".

Halford's +4:29 converted to 21:58 on actual for 4th place as he pushed Hafren CC's Ian Nisbett out by two seconds, costing him the Overall Series lead. Halford also made it maximum points in Wrekinsport's Evening 10 Series and looks a hard nut to beat. He stated: "There were some fantastic times. Great to see so many people racing".

It was a close call in the SB Junior Series as Henri Bedford equalled his personal best 24:21 set the previous week - but found himself pushed out by just three seconds by a first-time rider. Newport Shropshire CC's Tom Bullock posted an impressive 24:18 to make an immediate impact in the Series. He commented: "I was really pleased with my time, position overall and win in category in my first ever time trial. I found it tough but enjoyable and hope to be able to do a few more over the season when track and circuit races allow".

Wrekinsport CC 10 Mile Time Trial 23rd May 2018  - SB Sports Injuries Series

    Round 6

Road works popped up on Nova Raiders' Sporting 10 mile Time trial course yesterday which means the 6th round of the SB Sports Injuries Series was put in doubt. The club have made an approach to Wrekinsport CC to roll their event into our existing club 10 mile tt  tonight, and this has been accepted. In return Nova Raiders are providing marshals and helpers to assist with larger numbers.

Expect additional riders to turn up at The Woolpack tonight, signing on from just before 6pm.

    Evening 10 Series Round 4 - report

It was an all too familiar name at the top of the standings in Round 4 of the Wrekinsport Evening 10 Series as Chris Halford took another win to make it four out of four. Halford looks on unstoppable form as he opened up a commanding lead, gaining the maximum 24 points over the four rounds with a fine effort of 22 minutes 1 second, 57 seconds faster than in Round 3.

With conditions sunny and accompanied by a rare light wind coming from the advantageous east times amongst the 21-strong field were generally fast, with Dan Watts taking the runner-up spot in 22:23, 17 seconds ahead of Alex Leek.

There were excellent times posted lower down the field too with Henri Bedford smashing a huge 1:09 off his 10 mile personal best. The youngster crossed the finish line punching the air with delight as he came home in 24:21 to tie with Rich Smith for fifth spot.

The road bike category was a close call with just eight seconds separating first from second. Putting in his first appearance of the season Andy Loveland registered a fine 26:22, whilst Edward Biddle surprised himself in his first ever time trial to record a strong 26:30.

    • Round 5 takes place this Wednesday at 7pm - sign on at The Woolpack, Shawbirch.

    Wrekinsport CC Hanna Phipps-Jones 19

    Hanna Phipps-Jones 19 - race report

Turning up last minute after the event was underway didn't do any harm to Matt Garthwaite's chances as the SCCA Private Member took a dominant win and moved into the lead of the SB Sports Injuries Series in Round 4, Wrekinsport CC's Hanna Phipps-Jones 19 held over two laps of the rolling Shawbirch - Cotwall Bank course. Despite being tired from a major tour and getting baulked out on the course Garthwaite still managed to beat the nearest competition by over two minutes. Visibly faster on each pass of the finish line, Garthwaite stopped the watch on 41 minutes 58 minutes to take over the Series lead by four points from Ed Middleton, who ended his evening on a respectable 45:25 for 5th spot.

The Rhino Velo rider revealed however that he was by no means sure how his form would hold up: "I had no idea if my legs would work or not after riding a tough Tour of Ulster over the Bank Holiday weekend. Thankfully there was still something in them! Traffic wasn’t favourable after getting stuck behind a tractor on the out leg, but I was satisfied with my time overall".

Alex Leek made his debut in the 2018 SB Series and made an immediate impact to take runner-up spot - although he was another rider expressing concern about his form. Leek pushed Hafren CC's Ian Nisbett into third by just two seconds after ending his evening on 44:02, and was contented with his efforts: "I was happy with second after slow start to my season. Other than being a bit chilly it seemed OK conditions so I tried to keep the speed up on the drags and rest a bit on the faster sections. Well done to Matt on the win, and thanks to Wrekinsport for putting the event on".

Nisbett meanwhile was a little taken aback by the changeable nature of the course, which certainly provides variety. More used to the smooth roads of Mid-Wales he was nevertheless pleased to take the Veteran's win in +6:33, 50 seconds ahead of Wrekinsport's Chris Halford on Standard and 59 seconds on Actual, moving into the lead of this Series and up to third Overall thanks to his 44:04 effort. He commented: "A new course for me. I enjoyed it, but I did have to work to maintain a steady effort over the varied terrain. The bike seemed to be kicking around on the road surfaces too. It's always frustrating to miss out on a higher placing by two seconds, but I'm chuffed with the Veterans win".

In the Junior Series 14 year-old Henri Bedford was back for another try at over two laps having stepped up to a longer distance for the first time on this course last July - and was determined to beat his benchmark. With timekeeper Jenny York recording times for both laps the ever-smiling youngster had the distinction of knowing he had beaten both his 10 mile and 19 mile bests, knocking a huge 2:28 off his 19 mile record. He stated: "I really enjoyed the longer ride and was pleased to achieve a new course Personal Best In both my 10 and 19 mile times. Thank you to all at Wrekinsport and Dave and Jenny York for your support".

Meanwhile it was a quiet evening in the Women's Series with only competitor Toni Lynam of Wrekinsport pulling up before completing a lap with back problems.

Wrekinsport riders were competing for the Hanna Phipps-Jones Trophy, awarded on handicap, and after the handicaps were applied Bob Elliott came out top of the pile with an adjusted 41:14, comfortably ahead of runner-up Chris Halford, who was scratch man. He commented: "This is the first time I have won a medal for cycling never thought it was possible. I would like to thank all the organisers time keepers and marshals".

    • Round 5 of the SB Sports Injuries Series takes place on Wednesday at 7pm when Hafren CC promote their 10 on the new, fast D310/1 course entirely on the A483 starting and finishing near Berriew. HQ Berriew Leisure Centre.
