Andy Bason’s long-standing course record was finally smashed on the Shawbirch – Cotwall Bank circuit as Ribble Weldtite professional Jacob Tipper sliced 11 seconds off the benchmark on a far from perfect evening in Round 8 of the Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport. Tipper steamed around the course in 20 minutes 8 seconds, getting closer than anyone to dipping below the magical 20 minute/30mph barrier on a tough, sporting course having arrived at the event determined to break the record after travelling across from The Black Country. On a better evening he would surely have made that target, but a significant westerly win nixed progress on the toughest leg of the course between Crudgington and Cotwall Bank.

There was close competition for runner-up spot with three riders split by just four seconds as Henri Bedford continues to improve. The 17 year-old Revolutions Racing rider stopped the watch on 21:06, seeing off strong challenges from a brace of RAF riders with Adam Baker taking third in 21:09 an Scott Hill a second back for fourth.

Tomos Hales took the honours for the promoting club in a fine 21:40; 27 seconds back from his Round 7 effort showing the trickiness of conditions and opened up daylight at the head of the Series as a result with Chris Halford sitting this round out on the sidelines.

In the Road Bike Series the overall win was taken by Paramount CRT’s Chris Riley in 24:25, with new Wrekinsport member Luka Stolic taking the maximum six points on offer for Wrekinsport riders for the second week in a row with 25:29 despite being 48 seconds back on Round 7. Stuart Wortley again took over at the head of this Series thanks to his 32:11 effort; 40 seconds back on Round 7.

In the Women’s Series Clare Cotterill continues to maintain the Series lead but it’s a narrowing gap to Victoria Doran who just beat the 30 minute mark by two seconds; 37 seconds down from her Round 7 personal best.

The battle for supremacy between Tomos Hales and Chris Halford in the Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport took another turn as Hales was the winner in Round 7 in chilly and wet conditions. These types of conditions sometimes give easier passage through the air as the rain came down late event, with Hales storming over the finish line in 21 minutes 13 seconds as earlier riders avoided a soaking. This sliced a huge 44 seconds off his Round 6 time as Halford remained dry but went backwards three seconds to take the runner-up spot in 21:39. Hales now hold a slender one point lead at the head of the standings as the pair seemingly swap positions each week in a great battle for supremacy.

Taking third spot was a visiting rider from Wolverhampton Wheelers Paul Horton, gaining his first experience of the Shawbirch – Cotwall Bank circuit to stop the watch ofn 22:29, 12 seconds ahead of RAF rider Jason Walkley.

In the Road Bike Series another first-timer caused an upset in the contest between Dave Slater and Stuart Wortley as Junior rider Luka Stolic set a highly impressive time of 24:41 to take the maximum six points on offer. Slater dipped below the 30 minute/20mph mark to finish in 29:29 and tie things up at the top of the standings with Wortley who ended his evening on 31:31.

In the Women’s Series Victoria Doran took her first win of the season with a personal best 29:21 to narrow the gap to Clare Cotterill who had an off night by her standards, going back 2:16 and not enjoying the wet and windy conditions, which Doran seemingly relished.

The head-to-head between Chris Halford and Tomos Hales continued in Round 6 of The Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport as Halford snatched victory back to tie things on 32 points at the top of the standings. Hales has had the better of things in the last two rounds but warmer conditions saw Halford bounce back with a fine effort of 21 minutes 36 seconds, a huge improvement of 46 seconds over his Round 5 time. Hales had to be content with the runner-up spot despite a furious effort to hurl himself across the line in 21:57 – edging out visiting rider Jonathan Mills-Keeling of Bridgnorth CC by three seconds.

In the road bike category visiting rider Chris Riley of Paramount CRT rtook the Overall plaudits in 25:25, but a first entry of the season into this category for Wrekinsport club Chairman Dave Moore saw him take the maximum six points on offer after stopping the watch on 28 minutes exactly to put his stamp on this Championship, with Dave Slater clawing back another point from Stuart Wortley’s advantage to draw to just one point off the top thanks to rides of 29:19 and 31:30 respectively.

Meanwhile in the Women’s Series there seems to be no stopping Clare Cotterill as she took her third win on the trot in 27:38, easing way from Victoria Doran and opening up her lead to six points. There was additionally the pleasing sight of three Juniors in competition amongst the 29-strong field with Market Drayton CC’s Harry Corney taking the win in 23:46 – an impressive eighth overall.

Tomos Hales headed straight to the top in Round 5 of The Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport as the cold bit. Hales was, along with most riders, down on his Round 4 time also held in chilly conditions but this time made bitingly cold thanks to a fresh breeze. The only rider to beat 22 minutes, Hales stopped the watch on 21 minutes 43 seconds, 17 seconds down on his winning time in Round 4. Hales became sole leader at the top of the standings after Chris Halford tied with Jason Walkley for third spot on 22:22 with Halford a full 45 seconds doen on Round 4. No fan of racing in the cold, Halford saw a rider he beat the previous week cope better with the bone-chilling wind, with Bridgnorth CC’s Jonathan Mills-Keeling taking the runner-up spot in 22:08, 16 seconds down on Round 4.

There’s a new leader in the Road Bike Series as Stuart Wortley took full advantage of the absence of former Series leader Dave Slater to take the maximum six points available despite losing a huge 55 seconds off his Round 4 time. Wortley recorded 33:10 to see off a challenge from Stephen Porter-Knott, himself back 54 seconds on 33:55 and showing the toughness of conditions for riders not dipping below the wind thanks to an aerodynamic position.

In the Women’s Series Clare Cotterill continues to pile on the pressure, again pushing Victoria Doran out to open up a five point lead. Cotterill was back 29 seconds on her Round 4 effort in 28:14, whilst Doran was a full 1:19 back in 31:09.   

The perishing evenings continued in the Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport 10 as riders shivered their way around the course – with a dropping wind seeing Tomos Hales pull off a victory over Chris Halford to set up a tie at the top of the Series standings. Off 21 places behind Halford that difference in conditions was decisive as Hales stopped the watch on 21 minutes 26 seconds to take the win, 11 seconds ahead of Halford. Hales knocked 20 seconds off his Round 3 effort whilst Halford went back 3 seconds in conditions he is known not to favour. First of the visiting riders amongst a 39-strong field was Jonathan Mills-Keeling of Bridgnorth CC who captured 3^rd spot in 22:15.

In the Road Bike Series Dave Slater took another maximum six points to see off Stuart Wortley, stretching his lead to four points after crossing the line in 29:37. Bridgnorth CC Junior Nathan Fulwood, making his first appearance of the season stormed round to take Overall Road Bike honours in a superb 23:48 – good enough for 11^th spot.

In the Women’s Series Clare Cotterill also stretched her lead to four points with a solid 27:45, beating off a challenge from Victoria Doran by 2:05, but it was another young visitor Grace Lister of Cero Cycle Division who impressed with a fabulous effort of 22:26 to take 5^th spot Overall, showing the strength of the Junior riders.
