The second week of Wrekinsport’s club season saw another fast and furious 5 mile race around the Rushmore Lane circuit, with a first time win for the club’s 15 year-old Ben Southgate. Southgate was the only rider to dip below the 12 minute mark on a windy evening that bowled riders along on the final uphill leg from Allscott, meaning that times were much improved over week 1 with at least 30 seconds gained. Thankfully the rain stopped just before the event commenced and started again within seconds of the final rider finishing. Southgate crossed the line in 11 minutes 48 seconds, a 38 second improvement and was delighted to sense victory. The fast improving youngster is beginning to reckon in the standings as he gains strength.

First rider off the line Ian Bond wore No.2, No.1 being reserved in honour of the passing of the club’s oldest member Terry Collins who often started first rider off, with a minutes silence held before things got underway. Bond stopped the watch on 12:12 to see off Dave Moore and Ben Wood by 17 seconds, with the pair tying for third place. Best improvement was 47 seconds which resulted in shared honours for Ben Thompson and Stuart Wortley.

No.1 was reserved in memory of Terry Collins, who often took that number. A minute silence was held at the start to remember him.

Drizzle, cold conditions and uncertainty over which course was available due to two sets of road works in the area greeted riders for the opening event of the Wrekinsport CC club season, a fast and furious 5 mile time trial to open the lungs and get the legs re-accustomed to going fast again. With a new doctor’s surgery being built and 20 weeks of works in progress at Shawbirch island the uncertainty saw the Rushmore Lane circuit called into action in the gathering gloom. Phil Roberts was the only rider to dip below the 12 minute mark with an excellent 11 minute 56 second effort, a clear win of 30 seconds from Wrekinsport Junior Ben Southgate.

The circuit seems to suit younger riders, with Southgate only just managing to squeeze Newport Shropshire CC Junior Ethan Campbell out by four seconds, with Chris Riley taking fourth in 12:39 the best placed on a road bike.

Two sets of road works were identified potentially affecting our initial 5 mile events:

    1. New doctor's surgery being built at Shawbirch east of The Pheasant at Admaston - 3 way lights

    2. Major housing scheme 300 yards east of Shawbirch island affecting the island for 20 weeks.

With potentially two sets wiping out all three of our five mile courses an emergency one, the D305/2 has been applied for an accepted on Monday, 28/3, only to be used IF all of the three others can't be. It is only possible to know what is going on on the way to the event, but all courses start around a mile from HQ. There is a 'pecking order' of courses, required to be stated clearly under Road Traffic Act, 1960

    1. No lights near The Pheasant - first choice D305/1 D305/1 - MapMyRide

    2. Lights at Pheasant, Shawbirch Island clear - second choice D4/5 D4/5 - The Gate 5 - MapMyRide

    3. Roadworks popping up on B5063 - third choice D5/5 Wrekinsport 5 mile D5/5 - MapMyRide

    4. Roadworks near The Pheasant AND on Shawbirch island - Emergency course D305/2 D305/2 - MapMyRide

It is not possible to call this any earlier than the evening by examining what is going on at both locations.

Competitors were sweating on mobile road works being lifted in time for the opening event of the Shropshire Time Trialling season as things got underway on a windy day that had a marked effect on riders in Round 1 of the Friction Hydraulics Series, Wrekinsport CCs Chris Edwards Hilly 18 on the Worfield triangle. Fortunately the event ran as normal as the works at Swancote finished in time to save the event having to run short distance.

Reigning Friction Series champion Tim Beardmore signalled his intentions to set out a strong defence of that title with a win in a fine time of 40 minutes 59 seconds – but like all competitors he suffered on a gruelling opening leg to Sutton Maddock which sapped the strength thanks to a roaring headwind that significantly hampered progress and took character to fight through. However after the turn things varied between fast and scary as that wind played a huge part in proceedings. The Bridgnorth CC rider commented: “It’s great to be back racing on one of my favourite courses. Typical windy conditions made for a tough out leg to Sutton Maddock, followed by an extremely fast run in to Bridgnorth. The climbs went well, but there were some horrible cross winds to deal with in places. I felt good on the bike and was pleased with my time. I’m very happy to take the overall win, thanks to all at Wrekinsport for organising. Shame more people didn’t race it”. Beardmore’s final comment reflected an unusually low entry, potentially due to rising fuel costs, the simply miserable February weather which had seen part of this course underwater just a week before with pre-entry required, or fears over the removal of Covid restrictions which affected two riders.

With non-SCCA rider Thomas Bill of Stafford Triathlon Club pushing Beardmore hard, finishing just three seconds down, Wrekinsport CC’s Tomos Hales came closest of the County riders in 41:10, bettering his race-winning time from the 2021 event by 34 seconds to retain the promoting club’s Chris Edwards Shield. Hales is another fan of this testing circuit and was grateful things remained dry: “We had some good weather for the first and my favourite time trial of the year, apart from the northerly wind. New tarmac was fast down into Bridgnorth, and I felt good going up The Hermitage. Well done to Tim for a cracking time around the course. Thanks for the time keepers and marshals”.

Beardmore also won the Veteran’s competition, defending his Friction Veteran’s Championship status with a fine effort of +7:39, +2:03 ahead of team mate Jonathan Mills-Keeling, whose post-race comments show both the surprise wake up call the event provided, with hilly early season races the perfect way to get into shape quickly; as well as the strange sense of being back to normality so missing from life for two years: “I enjoyed it, although it was quite a shock to the system. Thanks to all involved and it was great to have cake at the HQ”!

The Women’s competition was affected by Covid with two riders having to pull out, leaving Wrekinsport’s Victoria Doran with a first taste of the fearsome Hermitage as she got around in 1:02:09. She stated: “Well you’ve got to be in it to win it I suppose! It was a tough course, but I enjoyed it. I certainly learned a lot too and there’s room for improvement next time I have a go at it”.
