With many riders’ eyes on a football semi-final entries to Round 11 were perhaps understandably down from normal levels, but that didn’t stop a terrific tussle between Chris Halford and Tomos Hales at the top of the Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport. The pair had been tying at the top of the standings going into the race but were split by just three seconds as Halford took the win in 21 minutes 53 seconds. Halford too over sole lead at the top of the Series despite struggling with a season-long knee injury that was being operated on the following morning, and here he was looking to consolidate his position as much as possible.

Hales has stepped up to challenge Halford during 2021 and having tied with him the previous evening in a Newport CC promotion was gutted at the finish line to finish three seconds off the pace. He had a 58 second gap to the riders in third spot Phil Roberts, with these three occupying the Top 3 spaces in the Series.

In the Road Bike Series Junior Luka Stolic continues to put in dominant performances as he tries to make up for lost ground. Stolic only joined the club from Round 7 but has tasted victory four times in four races, with a superb 25:17 effort seeing off Series leader Stuart Wortley by a large margin of 6:24. Wortley however has a 13 point advantage at the head of the standings and will be tough to reel in.

In the Women’s Series it was a straight head to head between the two women who were occupying the top two spaces, with Clare Cotterill sensing victory in 29:27, 1:23 ahead of Victoria Doran. This sees the pair on equal points at the top of the standings in what is turning out to be a keen competition.

Glorious conditions saw over a third of the field beat the hour in Round 9 of the SB Sports Injuries Series Wrekinsport CC’s 25 with personal bests the order of the day. With bonus points on offer for the longer distance it was Dean Callister who came out on top with a fabulous effort of 53 minutes 8 seconds on the Crudgington – Shawbirch – Tern Hill - Waters Upton course. The Nova Raider narrowed the gap at the top of the standings to just 12 points as he consolidated his second place in the Championship with just a light north-easterly wind to cope with. Callister was pleased with his effort, stating: “Great conditions and a fast night, I paced it well so was very happy with my time. It was a 25 mile personal best for me - thanks to Wrekinsport for a top evening”.

Callister wasn’t the only rider to set a personal best as runner-up Adam Baker also beat his previous benchmark with a fine effort of 54:17. Whilst much of the course is flat Baker’s comments show how the Hodnet bypass can catch out the unwary with a long, sapping drag back to Espley island, and how being ‘on the rivet’ of Functional Threshold Power, highest average wattage arider can sustain for one hour is a painful experience: “The race went well with a one minute personal best, although it's only my second 25 mile event. It was a tough course with slow sections of road and a headwind on the way out. 25 mile events are tough! Tying to hold close to FTP for an hour isn't pleasant - still fun nonetheless”.

Wrekinsport were holding their club 25 mile championship within the event and it was a straight battle between Tomos Hales and Chris Halford, with Hales taking third spot overall in 54:39 and Halford two places back in 55:07. Hales had his sights set on this trophy whilst enjoying the first use of Wrekinsport’s new HQ, Eyton Village Hall: “An excellent hosting from Wrekinsport and a great new HQ, I was pleased with the time on a quick night. I was very happy to take the trophy as I targeted this event at the start of the year - thanks to all the marshals and timekeepers”.

The rider getting in between Hales and Halford was Bridgnorth CC’s Jonathan Mills-Keeling in an actual time of 54:47, and who also took victory in the Veteran’s Series with a strong +15:09 with Halford runner-up in +12:36. Mills-Keeling is a regular visitor to Wrekinsport 10’s but seemed to enjoy the stretch, commenting: “A nice course, I had a great ride, thanks to Wrekinsport and all involved”.

The Series leader Henri Bedford had a quiet evening by his standards finishing 6^th in 55:35, but stretching his Junior Series lead to a huge 86 points. He explained: “I didn’t quite have the legs for some reason but I tried to limit my losses as best as I could - thanks to Wrekinsport for running the event as smoothly as ever”.

In the Women’s Series it was a case of coming up with the goods in the face of adversity as nothing seemed to be going right for Series leader Marie Llewellyn – as the Nova Raider scored a massive personal best regardless. Llewellyn stopped the clock on 1:07:07, stretching her Series lead over Wrekinsport’s Clare Cotterill who finished in 1:12:33. Llewellyn explained what went wrong: “Everything was against me for racing! I’d worked three night shifts with no sleep, and my boyfriend was pushing me to race when I just wanted to sleep! I ended up borrowing his shoes as I'd left mine in my horsebox, added to which my Garmin computer dying 10miles in! I thoroughly enjoyed the race, I was racing blind to power and heart rate, but I felt strong and put 100% in. I’m very happy with a new personal best by five minutes -thank you to the organisers once again”!

A rider on the comeback trail took a solid win as Dan Watts showed his regained form with a fabulous 21 minute 21 second effort in Round 10 of The Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport. Watts had been stationed in The Falklands which limited his training opportunities but he is now beginning to approach the level of form he showed during 2020, beating Chris Halford into the runner-up spot by 33 seconds.

Halford had other reason to celebrate however as he moved back into the joint lead of the Series, levelling things up with Tomos Hales on 49 points a piece thanks to his 21:54 ride. Watts and Halford were the only riders to beat 22 minutes on a mild evening where times were generally fractionally better than in Round 9. The rider taking third spot Darren Shaw gained his best finish of the season with a 23:01 effort as constant positional fine tuning of his new time trial bike seems to be paying dividends as he edged out Phil Roberts by 18 seconds. Roberts is having a ding-dong battle with Rob Jackson in the Overall standings and a two second advantage saw Roberts claim third place in the Series on his own right as a result.

In the Road Bike Series Luka Stolic keeps piling on the pressure with the Junior taking his fourth straight win in a row, which is all the races he’s entered, showing his potential as he posted an excellent 25:23. But for a late start in the Series Stolic would surely be in a commanding position, with nearest challenger Dave Slater on 30:04. Meanwhile Series leader Stuart Wortley had a nightmare evening thanks to a cleat which simply wouldn’t clip in and the difference that mechanical issue cost him was easily demonstrable as he was 1:58 back on his Round 9 effort in 32:46.

In the Women’s Series Victoria Doran seized on the opportunity to move to the head of the standings after crossing the finish line in 30:05, with Clare O’Donnell getting nearest in 32:34.

Chris Halford narrowed the gap at the top of the Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport with a determined win in Round 9. Halford was the only rider to dip below the 22 minute mark with a fine 21 minutes 56 seconds after taking a week off to recharge his batteries. Conditions were decidedly slower than in Round 8 with Series leader Tomos Hales finding himself relegated to third place with 22:18, 38 seconds slower than his Round 8 effort even though that was a far from perfect evening. Hales was pushed out by visiting rider Jonathan Mills-Keeling of Bridgnorth CC who stopped the watch on 22:03 to take the runner-up spot just 7 seconds off Halford’s pace, putting in a strong effort just 10 seconds back from his Round 8 time.

In the Road Bike Series Junior Luka Stolic continues to impress with his third win in as many rounds to put in a late challenge for the medal positions. Stolic crossed the line in 24:42, just one second off the pace of Paramount CRT’s Chris Riley and actually improved by a huge 47 seconds showing his increasing fitness levels. Stuart Wortley continues to lead the Series and opened up his lead to nine points thanks to his 30:48 effort, a big improvement of 1:23 over Round 8.  

In the Women’s Series Clare Cotterill fought back against Victoria Doran after a couple of uncharacteristic rounds with the improvement of the evening – 3:28 to cross the line in 28:23, with Doran just beating the 20mph benchmark in 29:54.
