A cooler evening brought slightly slower but still impressive times in Round 3 of The Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport as Tomos Hales starts to edge away from the chasing pack. 2021’s Series Champion is setting out a strong defence of that title as he opened the gap at the top of the standings to five points from Phil Roberts with his third win in as many events, losing 11 seconds on his Round 2 time to charge for the line convincingly looking as though he really meant it in a fine time of 21 minutes 47 seconds.

Hales had a comfortable winning margin of 43 seconds from Oliver Rodwell, making his 2022 debut with a creditable 22:30. First of the visiting riders was Royal Navy's Daniel Soltys, just seeing off Stourbridge Velo's Darren Shaw by two seconds in 22:58, 157 seconds off his Round 2 effort, with Shaw one of the minority of riders improving, in this case by 21 seconds.

Shaw's wasn’t the best improvement however, with Clare O'Donnell slicing a huge 1:36 off her Round 2 effort. She had no answer for Deb Hutson-Lumb however, making her first appearance in the Series with a fabulous 24:09 to take the Women’s win.

In the Road Bike Series Ben Wood took maximum points for the second week in a row to head to the top of the standings with a fine 25:57, 15 seconds down on Round 2, with Stourbridge Velo’s Scott O’Neill taking the Overall Road Bike honours in 25:03. Junior Ben Southgate meanwhile was one of the improvers, knocking 19 seconds off to finish 8th Overall in 23:57.

A lovely, warm evening with the slightest of easterly breezes guaranteed fast times in Round 2 of The Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport as Tomos Hales took a fine win in 21 minutes 36 seconds to extend his lead in defence of the Evening 10 Series Trophy and slice 21 seconds off his Round 1 effort. Hales looked locked and loaded as he stormed through the finish line to see off the attentions of a dup of military men, with Dan Watts taking the honours for the RAF against Royal Navy’s Daniel Soltys. However Watts had a significant scare three miles in as his tri bars worked loose, throwing him forward and meaning he completed seven miles with one hand stopping the tri bars fouling his front wheel and the other gripping the tops. Watts is used to competing on a road bike, so despite loosing aerodynamic advantage he still posted a fine 21:53 against Soltys’ 22:44.

Adam Mumford knocked 41 seconds off his Round 1 time to finish in 23:15, overhauling Phil Roberts just three seconds back who bettered his Round 1 effort by 13 seconds, meaning the pair share Series runner-up position. In the Road Bike Series Ben Wood took maximum points with an excellent 25:42, with Stourbridge Velo’s Scott O’Neill taking the win in 24:53, whilst Ashley Kirkham moved to the top of the standings thanks to his 28:18 effort. The race also saw the first entrant in the Women’s Series with Clare O’Donnell taking the first points in 33:54. Meanwhile two Juniors continue to improve with Ben Southgate slicing 16 seconds off his Roun 1 effort in 24:16 and Lichfield City’s Cerys Greaves posting 26:18, 5 seconds off her Round 1 performance.

A lovely evening greeted riders in the opening round of the 2022 season of The Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport as Jonathan Mills-Keeling took a fine win on the Shawbirch - Cotwall Bank circuit. The Bridgnorth CC rider raced home with a 29 second advantage over the chasing pack after stopping the watch on 21 minutes 28 seconds. The second week of Wrekinsport’s club season saw another fast and furious 5 mile race around the Rushmore Lane circuit, with a first time win for the club’s 15 year-old Ben Southgate. Southgate was the only rider to dip below the 12 minute mark on a windy evening that bowled riders along on the final uphill leg from Allscott, meaning that times were much improved over week 1 with at least 30 seconds gained. Thankfully the rain stopped just before the event commenced and started again within seconds of the final rider finishing. Southgate crossed the line in 11 minutes 48 seconds, a 38 second improvement and was delighted to sense victory. The fast improving youngster is beginning to reckon in the standings as he gains strength.

First rider off the line Ian Bond wore No.2, No.1 being reserved in honour of the passing of the club’s oldest member Terry Collins who often started first rider off, with a minutes silence held before things got underway. Bond stopped the watch on 12:12 to see off Dave Moore and Ben Wood by 17 seconds, with the pair tying for third place. Best improvement was 47 seconds which resulted in shared honours for Ben Thompson and Stuart Wortley.
