There’s a famous expression regarding the cat being away and that certainly applied in Round 4 of the Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport as Oli Freeman took full advantage of a number of absences to take his first win. With Series leader Tomos Hales at a joint training/stag week in Majorca, Freeman took a great win on a warm evening accompanied by a light breeze to charge around the Long Lane circuit in 22 minutes 57 seconds, moving up to second place in the Series standings in the process.

Freeman’s win was 56 seconds from Hayley Wells, massively impressing with a strong 23:53 to push out Ben Wood by 37 seconds – and over 10 minutes ahead of the next female Sarah Bradshaw who is in only her second race for the club. Wells has a dominant lead in the Women’s Series of 14 points which will be hard to challenge even at this early stage.

The Road Bike Series was hotly contested with first-timer Peter Jukes heading up a creditable 50% of the event entries choosing to ride traditional bikes, with his 26:28 pushing out club chairman Dave Moore by 24 seconds. Mooremoved into joint lead of the Series level with David Seager who was fourth in this category on 27:06 despite improving his Round 3 time by 35 seconds, showing the keenness of competition.

The only Junior riding was Newport’s Ben Bramford-Hale, who registered another fine personal best of 27:14, lowering his benchmark from Round 3 by 59 seconds.
