A bit Moore about Wrekinsport CC Time Trial
Stretching from April to early September, the Wrekinsport CC put on 23 time trials with the emphasis squarely on catering for those new to time trialling -as well as giving more experienced riders a work out. It's not called the race of truth for nothing, as time trialling sees riders stretch themselves over set courses to try and beat their own benchmarks from earlier weeks. The season starts and ends with 5 mile events, ideal for beginners to get a taste of the adrenaline buzz that comes with this branch of the sport. As the evenings stretch the emphasis changes predominantly to the more usual 10 mile distance, with something to attract riders no matter what their level of experience.
There are Wrekinsport CC medals to be won based on fastest actual times for both males and females; as well as on handicap, set each year based on a rider's fastest ride from the previous season (or first of the new one if they didn't race in 2017). That's not all however as there are two points competitions to get involved in. Both award 6 points for a win, descending in 1 points steps to 1 for finishing. The first is on overall time regardless of what type of bike you ride. The second however is tailored for riders without aero equipment, with it's own set of points awarded. That means no Tri-bars, aero helmet, and wheels without bladed spokes with a rim no greater than 5cm, ideal for newer riders to gain time trialling experience before committing to an extra bike!
Throughout the season there are some longer - and shorter - events that are part of County Series, which will see riders from other clubs turn up to add to the competition. The two-lapper 19 mile Hanna Phipps- Jones and Gordon Davies events see club trophies and medals awarded based on the same handicaps used for the 10's, but doubled up due to the extra distance. There's also a brand new club 25 which will be the club's 25 mile Chanpionship. At the other end of the scale is the 1 mile end of season hill climb, the only club event not using The Woolpack, Shawbirch as HQ which sees the club's Hill Climb Championship Trophy awarded. Lastly there's the terrific fun of the 2- Up, where riders compete in pairs for the club's 2-Up Trophy. Egging each other on and gaining a rest by drafting at the back usually produces faster times than normal and gives a refreshing new dimension to time trialling.
The events attract all abilities, and if you haven't had a go before you are sure to soon get the bug. It doesn't matter if you are fast or slow, all are welcome, and it couldn't be easier to compete - just turn up, sign on and pay £5 entry fee. There is always a friendly face to ask if you don't know the ropes.
