The leaders of The Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport and the Wrekinsport Road Bike Series stretched their advantages in Round 6 as both took wins in their respective categories. Rich Smith shaved two seconds off his Round 5 time despite miserable conditions that saw riders battle against a strong wind on Cotwall Bank, the toughest part of the course and rain that sprung up mid-event to ensure competitors received a liberal soaking.

Smith saw off the attentions of Tomos Hales for the second week in a row with his 23:16 effort - though by a smaller margin as Hales narrowed the gap to just 11 seconds after finishing 19 seconds off the pace in Round 5. Smith now holds a four point advantage over Hales in the Championship, with Allan Henderson lying in third place Overall thanks to a tie on the night with Rob Jackson for third, with both riders finishing in 24:17.

In the Road Bike Series Wrekinsport Chairman Dave Moore opened up a seven point advantage over Andy Loveland with a 25:56 ride, five seconds faster than in Round 5, with Bethan Till finishing in runner-up spot on 29:17.

The youngest Wrekinsport club member took on the oldest still competing regularly - and finished with a personal best as 15 year-old Henry Fleming beat 80 year-old Ron Perks by six seconds. Fleming has been frustrated in trying his new time trial bike out after a hand injury, but with that finally healed he stopped the watch on 32:08, slicing a huge 1:16 off his previous best.

Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport - Round 5 2019

Warm conditions brought a 22 rider field out for Round 5 of the Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport as Rich Smith took a solid win and stretched his lead at the top of the Series standings. World, European and British Transplant Games Champion Smith put the extra fitness gained racing on rolling territory in the Shropshire and South Staffordshire Cycle Road Race League to good advantage on the lumpy Long Lane circuit to beat Round 4 winner Tomos Hales by 19 seconds - as Wrekinsport riders took the Top 4 places on their home circuit. Smith stopped the watch on 23 minutes 18 seconds for his second win of the Series in 2019.

Hales was a comfortable runner-up and took over sole occupancy of second place in the Series thanks to his 23:37 ride, a place he shared after Round 4 with Allan Henderson, who took third place on the night in 24:21.

There was also a deciding split in the Road Bike Series, designed with the purer original version of the sport before the adoption of aero equipment, with a triple tie for first after Round 4 resolved as Wrekinsport Chairman Dave Moore took over at the head of the table on his own thanks to a 26:01 effort, beating Andy Loveland into runner-up spot on 27:27.

Round 4 of the newly re-badged Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport saw a first-time win for Tomos Hales - as road works saw a course change to the fast 'Tiddly' circuit. Riders got a sneak preview of racing on the beautiful new tarmac at Peplow whilst the normal Cotwall Bank circuit got a liberal dose of chippings as riders took advantage of a glorious evening with hardly a breath of wind, ensuring fast times.

Hales came out at the top of the standings with an excellent effort of 23 minutes 23 seconds to push out Wrekinsport team mate Allan Henderson by 18 seconds. Those performances were enough to elevate the pair into joint second spot in the Series standings as they narrowed the gap to an absent Rich Smith to just two points.

Taking third spot - but only just was Richard Howes, putting in a first appearance of the season with a strong 26:06, just one second ahead of Mark Golding, the best-placed guest rider.

Club Chairman Dave Moore threw his hat in the ring in the Road Bike Series, finishing 6th overall in 25:56 and instantly going into the joint lead of an event designed for riders not using aero equipment. Meanwhile Jen Morris was the only woman in competition and immediately loved the course on first sight, ending the evening on 32:30.

Wrekinsport CC are delighted to announce a new supporter coming on board for the club's Evening 10 Series. Decathlon UK's Telford branch, based on The Forge Retail Park will headline the newly renamed "Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport" in a tie-in that will see prize vouchers provided to event helpers at the club's annual presentation.

In what is hoped to be a mutually beneficial relationship the shop will also provide mechanical help at the club's upcoming LBL charity ride to Baschurch on 9th June from Wellington Leisure Centre in aid of The Brain Tumour Charity.

Wrekinsport club Chairman Dave Moore commented: "We are delighted to welcome a major player like Decathlon on board and look forward to a close future working relationship with the store and it's staff, with a couple already in the process of joining the club".

    Wrekinsport CC Hannah Phipps-Jones 19

The heavens opened to make Round 5 of the SB Sports Injuries Series a tricky one as riders battled the elements in Wrekinsport CC's Hannah Phipps-Jones 19. Held over two laps of the club's normal Shawbirch - Cotwall Bank circuit, the cold affected some more than others as Dan Watts took the win in a fine time of 42 minutes 40 seconds for victory by over a minute. Watts made up some ground on Series leader Chris Halford to move into fourth spot in the Championship and clearly put some effort in doing so, recording a course personal best despite cursing the foul weather that blighted the event. He stated: "What could have been a quick night with a favourable wind was scuppered by wet and cold weather. Like most the urge to dive into the HQ after the first lap was strong. I was pleased to take the win and PB for the 19 mile time trial, kudos to any who raced, marshalled and spectated the race in those conditions".

Watts wasn't the only one making up ground on Halford as Hafren CC's Ian Nisbett put in a strong effort to beat the Wrekinsport rider both on Overall and on Veteran's Standard. Leading off the field, Nisbett was in no mood to hang around and was happy to get the ordeal over with. His actual time of 43:42 took the runner-up spot and pushed Halford into third by 14 seconds, whilst he won the Veteran's competition with a fine +7:08, five seconds ahead of Halford when the age-related standard was applied. He commented: "I can’t say I enjoyed it much! I started strongly, but my performance dropped off earlier than expected so I just tried to keep the speed up and take a breather where I could. My visor started to mist up during the second lap – which actually helped as I couldn’t really see how far from the finish I was"!

Halford didn't enjoy the conditions, and revealed that a mechanical problem upset his usual smooth rhythm - despite bettering his 2018 ride by 1:07. Down nearly a minute on Watts at the end of the first lap Halford had a quite evening by his high standards: "It went badly - I don't go to well in the wet and cold. My seat post clamp worked loose which was causing issues. I eased up a bit on the first lap and nearly stopped, but then decided to carry on". Halford now has a six point lead to Nisbett in the Overall Championship whilst in the Veteran's Series he holds a four point advantage over the same rider.

Taking third spot in the Veteran's Rich Smith just saw off the attentions of Ian Pollard by seven seconds to record a solid +5:38. But he wasn't finished there as he took Bronze in Wrekinsport's Hannah Phipps-Jones Handicap, the same position as in 2018 with an adjusted 42:34, whilst it was a close call for Gold and Silver with Bethan Till just seeing off Tomos Hales by a solitary second in an adjusted 41:15. Smith commented: "I managed third in the Hannah Phipps-Jones last year - I remember it being substantially warmer and dryer though! I really enjoyed it despite the rain. It was wet and cold but with no wind to speak of which helped. I was pleased with the ride, it was actually worse for the marshals, helpers and timekeepers than for the riders, so thanks to them"!

Four women took the line, with SCCA Private Member Alison Dockney taking the win with a fine effort of 51:43. Like Nisbett she also had trouble with her visor as the rain stopped and the course gently warmed: "Heavy rain started half way round lap one and the visor on my helmet fogged up so I had very little visibility from then on. I think I found every single pothole so was glad to get round with no punctures! Well done to all who braved abysmal conditions and fingers crossed for some sunshine next round! A thoroughly miserable night for marshals and timekeeping". Dockney beat Hafren CC's Louise Hurdley into the runner-up spot - though Hurdley's 54:44 moved her up into the lead of the SB Women's Series, holding an advantage of eight points over Dockney.

In the SB Junior Series a nascent talent continues to grow as Henri Bedford added another 20 points to his commanding Junior title defence with a superb personal best. Bedford bore down on the finish line using all his strength to set an excellent time of 45:31 to capture sixth spot overall and set a fabulous 32 point Junior Series lead in the process. He commented: "I was pleased with my performance given the horrible conditions and somehow managed to improve in course time from last year. Well done to all those who turned out to ride and marshal. Here’s hoping for better conditions next time"!
