Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport event No.2 2022 - report

A lovely, warm evening with the slightest of easterly breezes guaranteed fast times in Round 2 of The Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport as Tomos Hales took a fine win in 21 minutes 36 seconds to extend his lead in defence of the Evening 10 Series Trophy and slice 21 seconds off his Round 1 effort. Hales looked locked and loaded as he stormed through the finish line to see off the attentions of a dup of military men, with Dan Watts taking the honours for the RAF against Royal Navy’s Daniel Soltys. However Watts had a significant scare three miles in as his tri bars worked loose, throwing him forward and meaning he completed seven miles with one hand stopping the tri bars fouling his front wheel and the other gripping the tops. Watts is used to competing on a road bike, so despite loosing aerodynamic advantage he still posted a fine 21:53 against Soltys’ 22:44.

Adam Mumford knocked 41 seconds off his Round 1 time to finish in 23:15, overhauling Phil Roberts just three seconds back who bettered his Round 1 effort by 13 seconds, meaning the pair share Series runner-up position. In the Road Bike Series Ben Wood took maximum points with an excellent 25:42, with Stourbridge Velo’s Scott O’Neill taking the win in 24:53, whilst Ashley Kirkham moved to the top of the standings thanks to his 28:18 effort. The race also saw the first entrant in the Women’s Series with Clare O’Donnell taking the first points in 33:54. Meanwhile two Juniors continue to improve with Ben Southgate slicing 16 seconds off his Roun 1 effort in 24:16 and Lichfield City’s Cerys Greaves posting 26:18, 5 seconds off her Round 1 performance.
