Tomos Hales continued his relentless charge in defence of the Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport with another maximum 6 points in Round 7. Despite windy conditions Hales managed to beat his Round 6 effort by 15 seconds with a fine 22 minutes 13 seconds to extend his lead to 11 points in the Series from Phil Roberts, exactly a minute behind.

Two visiting riders took the remaining podium spots with a greatly improved Chris Riley of Paramount CRT the only other rider to dip below 23 minutes in 22:29, and Stourbridge Velo’s Darren Shaw agonisingly just missing out in 23:01.

In the Women's Series Deb Hutson-Lumb continued to make up lost ground with an impressive 24:26, moving to two points behind Clare O’Donnell; whilst in the Road Bike Series Dave Moore took over the lead thanks to an event-winning 26:12, an excellent 20 second improvement on his Round 6 effort. Meanwhile Junior Ben Southgate put in a good ride after battling it out with Roberts in the final 100 yards to the finish line, stopping the watch on 24:14, a 22 second improvement.

As part of Wrekinsport CC's 100th year celebrations the club held two extremely popular Anniversary Rides to commemorate the centenary starting and finishing from Wellington Leisure Centre. The origins of the club begin with The Wrekin Cycling and Athletic Club formed in 1922, and over 80 riders signed up for the challenge, with other local clubs joining in to help cement the celebrations making for a real occasion, and many of the club's oldest and long-standing members also taking part. Many of the riders were sporting a special edition commemorative cycling top voted for by the membership in a striking light blue, with the club's normal red, yellow and black colours banded around the chest; and with a 100 year badge and “1922-2022” prominently displayed.

First off were riders for “Gos' Gran Fondo”, a type of long distance challenge originating in Italy in 1970, and roughly translating to "Big Ride" – and with 116 kilometres and 1,290 metres of climbing taking in Church Stretton, Homer, Broseley, Bridgnorth and Little Wenlock to contend with it was not for the faint hearted. The ride was named after the club's premier long distance mile-eater Dave Gostelow, who is currently recovering from a stroke.

The shorter 50km ride “Fletch's 50” closely followed an infamous club run undertaken by the club's 'C’ ride for the first half; taking in Harley, Homer, The Wyke and Broseley; before a further leg-pounding trip to Little Wenlock via Spout Lane with 660 metres of climbing involved, not least Homer Bank which briefly touches 18% and a leg-breaking climb entering Wyke village. Copious refreshments were gratefully received mid-ride at Broseley Victoria Hall courtesy of Broseley Life Skills and Tea Room, with a baking sun accompanied by a fresh wind adding to the need for respite.

Reflecting on the success of the event club Chairman Dave Moore commented: “A fabulous celebration ride for our 100th year as a cycling club. The club has been through many changes over time; technology and social media in recent years have kept us on our toes. But the love of cycling and making friends is what will always be at the forefront of this wonderful club. Here's to the next 100 years!”

A tough evening saw times down in Round 6 of The Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport – but it didn’t change the winner as Tomos Hales stormed to his 6th straight win and a maximum possible 36 points. Hales looks a shoo-in for the title even with nine rounds to go as he powered towards the finish line in 22 minutes 28 seconds, 25 seconds down from his Round 5 effort thanks to a stiff southerly wind that hampered progress on the ’back’ leg between Cotwall Bank and Shawbirch.

Two visiting riders got closest with Bridgnorth CC’s Jonathan Mills-Keeling taking the runner-up spot in 22:56 whilst Paramount CRT’s Chris Riley took the remaining podium place in 23:29, 29 seconds down on his Round 5 effort. Phil Roberts was the closest of Wrekinsport’s own riders in 24:16, just a single second ahead of Richard Howes and lies in the runner-up spot in the Series 10 points adrift.

Before this race Ben Wood an ave Moore were tying for the lead of the Road Bike Series, but Wood got the better of the night in 26:11, 21 seconds ahead of Moore to open a slender one point lead.

There was a good turnout of three Juniors with Bridgnorth CCs Nathan Fullwood best place in 4th overall on 23:36 – a fabulous time on a road bike, with Ben Southgate on 24:36 and Cerys Greaves winning the Women’s race on 26:16. However that didn’t stop Clare O’Donnell returning to the head of the Women’s Series standings as she gets used to racing on a dedicated time trial bike.

Tomos Hales took his 5th straight win in the Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport on a tough evening blighted by a brisk and chilly southerly breeze with rain thrown in for good measure. Hales had a big challenge to fend off from a former Series champion Chris Halford, making a belated first appearance of the season, which proved vital as Hales’ greater race fitness prove decisive. Hales stopped the watch on 22 minutes 3 seconds, 33 seconds ahead of Halford, whose coast for the last 20 metres to the finish line nearly cost dearly with a greatly improved Oliver Rodwell nearly causing an upset a further three seconds back on 22:39. Hales now has a commanding 9 point lead after scoring the maximum 30 points on offer, with Phil Roberts in runner-up spot on 21.

In the Road Bike Series Paramount CRT’s Richard Coffey took overall victory in 25:40, but the close battle between club Chairman Dave Moore and Ben Wood continued with Moore coming home 7 seconds to the good in 26:15. This once again saw the pair tied at the top of the standings on 23 points with the pair seemingly looking to duke it out across the remaining 10 rounds.

In the Women’s Series there’s a new leader with Deb Hutson-Lumb posting a great time of 24:12 to finish 7th Overall. There was also a close tussle between two Juniors with Ben Southgate ending his evening on 24:15, 11 seconds ahead of Newport Shropshire CC's Ethan Campbell.
