Heavy rain reduced enthusiasm for Round 12 of the Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport with just seven riders taking the line – but more than one coming back with a big smile. 14 year-old Tom Cooper didn’t let conditions get in the way of his first ever time trial, coming across the finish line beaming from ear to ear having clearly enjoyed himself. Cooper stopped the watch on 30 minutes 35 seconds to set a benchmark for the future.

At the top of the standings Tomos Hales took another win as he looks to make up for lost ground after time out racing County level events and a stag function. Hales crossed the line in 22 minutes 8 seconds to beat Phil Roberts by 1:05, with Roberts now having a single point lead from Hales to take into the final three rounds.

In the Road Bike Series Cooper was not the only first-time entrant as Rich Smith changed his normal time trial bike for a road version one – and promptly took the win in 26:06 from Dave Moore, back in 27:27 on his single speed featuring knobbly tyres and cow horn handlebars. Series leader Elliott Wills took advantage of the absence of season-long rival Dave Seager to extend his Series lead to six points after finishing in 30:27.

A dead heat for first place made for an intriguing ending to 2023’s Mower Mec 2-Up Series as riders faced a quite different challenge to normal. With 4-way traffic lights at Crudgington crossroads a move to the tight and technical Shawbirch – Long Lane circuit for Round 7, run by Wrekinsport CC meant 11 turns had to be negotiated, breaking up rider rhythm and meaning pairs had to settle into frequent changes of pace – and occasional traffic snarl-ups. Pairs had to complete 2laps of the tight and technical circuit, designed by swapping start and finish points of a club 5 mile course – with Mason Durant and Paul Duncan tying for honours on the night with Dean Callister and Jonathan Mills-Keeling in 21 minutes 36 seconds. After 2½ miles Callister and Mills-Keeling held a one second advantage, and by 6¼ miles had stretched that out to 13 seconds. However Durant and Duncan put the power on in the final 3¾ mile lap, thanks to luck of the draw meaning they could see their rivals for much of the latter part of their race, spurring them on to greater heights using the ‘negative split’ strategy and having a clearer run through hindering traffic. Durant and Duncan helped themselves to Mower Mec Overall Gold, edging out Hafren CC’s Jan Davies and Mark Hill who doubled up on medals to seal Overall 2-Up Silver to add to the Mixed Team Gold won just 24 hours earlier.

Durant enjoyed his evening’s racing and the type of course more suited to road racing skills than time trialling’s usual flat out effort. He commented: “The race went well, good power from both of us, reasonable changes and good communication throughout. Well done to Dean and Jon, and thanks to luck of sign-on times they were a good carrot for us to chase on the second and third laps. We could have taken some of the turns a bit better, but I really liked the course - a really different challenge and physiology from the normal faster courses. It’s been a great series with Paul; we have really improved and learnt a lot throughout - thanks a lot to all the organisers”. Duncan added: “First time racing that course, we went reasonably fast and were happy to tie with such accomplished time triallists. There was some room for improvement, mainly on the technical section after exiting the A442. I carried too much speed in on the second lap, nearly lost the back end and wiped off way too much speed. Pleased with the time and joint win though! We have both had a great time racing the Mower Mec Series. For my first proper season in time trialling I’m really proud that Mason and I have secured the championship win. I’m looking forward to returning next year for more 2-Up racing - thanks to everyone involved in organising and keeping us safe throughout the Series”.

Mills-Keeling put a long memory to good use as he remembered road racing on exactly the same circuit when traffic was rather lower, riding as a pair for the first time with Callister. He stated: “I raced the course on my first ever road race in 1989. It was much busier then I remembered, but nice to mix it up and the first time I have ridden with Dean in a 2-Up. We got caught with some traffic, but well done to the other team for joint first”. Callister added: “Great fun, and great to ride with Jon. A tricky course as a 2-Up, but we got round with a few stops due to traffic, but that’s open road racing - well done to other team in joint win”.

Taking the honours for the promoting club were two riders normally trying to rip the legs off one another in Wrekinsport club events – Ben Southgate and Phil Roberts. Here though they worked together to take third spot in 22:57 by a solitary second from reigning 2-Up Champions Rob McGregor and Chris Riley, unfortunately making their only appearance as a pair in 2023. Southgate and Roberts were three seconds adrift at 2½ miles, which had extended to five seconds after 6¼ miles, but pulled a rabbit out of the hat to scorch around the final lap and just take the final podium position. Roberts commented: “A new course brought it challenges. Looking at the split times we paced it exceptionally well with a really strong last lap. Well done Ben for digging deep”. Southgate added: “Happy with how we rode, it was a lot more technical than our normal course”.

With the Mixed Team medals decided 24 hours earlier at Ludlow and lying in the Overall Bronze position Vic Doran kept an eye on who turned up on the evening, with partner Ashley Kirkham on standby. When it became obvious that they had sealed that Bronze to add to the Mixed Team Silver won 24 hours earlier, Doran teamed up with Mollie Croxon to add Women’s Gold to her medal haul – the first time anyone has won medals in every available category. From the sidelines Kirkham stated: “I was initially targeting the Mixed Team, so getting anything else was a pleasant surprise”. Doran and Croxon stopped the watch on 31:18, with Doran commenting: “It’s been great riding the 2-Ups with Ash. Sharing the success of an Overall Bronze and a Mixed Team Silver is the icing on the cake, and then a Gold riding with Mollie is the cherry on the top!” Croxon added: “My first 2-Up event and Vic brought a great positive spirit. Super-nice to win events as a team; and the support we have received for winning has been really nice - thank you for the opportunity”.

With the Mixed Team medals already sorted a very last minute team paired up after a bit of persuasion and intent to ride solo, taking eighth spot overall in 24:41. Deb Hutson-Lumb and Ben Wood had never ridden together before, but both displayed the sheer fun element of this format in their post race comments. Wood commented: “The partnership with Deb was great. It was very last minute, but I really enjoyed riding with her. The technical course meant it was difficult to get our rhythm going and we seemed to always catch up with people at a junction - big thanks to Deb for partnering up with me”! Hutson-Lumb added: “As a last minute, never ridden together before 2-Up team both admitting to being rubbish at corners I think we did rather well. Ben is sharper away from turns than I am, but we managed to keep it together pretty well, and it was way more fun than riding the course solo”.

Phil Roberts took the win in Round 11 of The Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport to move into joint first place in the Series standings, taking advantage of the absence of two of the leading riders, Ben Southgate and Tomos Hales to make up lost ground. Roberts stopped the clock on 23 minutes 3 seconds on a tricky evening with a hampering and brisk north-westerly wind affecting times, beating off the challenge of Nova Raiders’ James Ingram by 24 seconds. Roberts and Southgate now tie on 38 points, leading Hales by a two point advantage as the Series draws ever nearer its end. Third spot on the night went to Adam Mumford with 23:51, beating Rich Smith for the final podium spot by 19 seconds.

In the Road Bike Series another Nova Raider Oscar Johnstone took the overall win from another visiting rider Richard Coffey of Paramount CRT, with Johnstone recording a 12 second advantage with 25:26. Leading Wrekinsport rider was club Chairman Dave Moore, taking the maximum six points on offer with 27:33, whilst the battle at the top of the Series saw Elliott Wills double his lead to a narrow two points after beating Dave Seager by eight seconds with 28:10.

In the Women’s Series there was a lone entry from Mollie Croxon, suffering in the wind with 31:20 but adding a further six points to her Series lead which is now 19 points ahead of Deb Hutson-Lumb.

Tough conditions made Wrekinsport’s Gordon Davies 19 mile time trial a testing affair in more ways than one as a strong westerly wind made things difficult for competitors in Round 8 of the SB Sports Injuries Series. Being held over two laps of the club’s usual Shawbirch – Crudgington – Cotwall Bank circuit riders knew just what was facing them second time around in a race won by Phil Roberts, with the time reflecting the difficulty as he won by 28 seconds after crossing the finish line exhausted in 44 minutes 28 seconds after taking the win from West Midlands Police rider James Gibney. Roberts moved up to equal 5th in the SB Series standings and used form gained in two recent 25’s, stating: “I paced the ride really well and was very happy to take the win. I think I managed to ride the second lap quicker than the first which is always a good sign on a long time trial. My race legs are in great form at the moment after back to back 25's and a couple of road races. Twice up Cotwall Bank into the big headwind was a massive slog. Well done everyone for completing 2 laps and thanks as always to the marshals and organisers”.

Gibney was using the events as tapering training for two National level events and expressed satisfaction at his effort. Whilst hard conditions aren’t pleasant pushing hard into a block headwind is definitely great preparation for taking advantage when racing in more favourable circumstances, as Gibney explained: “I was preparing for the National Emergency Services 10 and 25 mile time trials in Keswick the following weekend and was using the opportunity to try race pacing and tactics in difficult conditions and was pleased with a second-place finish”.

Paramount’s Chris Riley filled the final podium spot with a solid 45:14, as well as taking runner-up spot in the SB Veteran’s contest with +7:02 and narrowing the lead of Jonathan Mills-Keeling to 16 points as a result. Riley was hampered in his efforts out on course which thankfully didn’t affect his points tallies in any way, but he knew he had been in a race: “A tough evening on the slopes of Cotwall Bank fighting a brisk westerly. Unusually for this course I was held up by traffic on several occasions but was never in contention to beat a flying Phil Roberts who was miles ahead. It's a great course over the two laps distance and sadly missing a few more bike riders. Thanks Dave and Rita”.

There was no stopping Deb Hutson-Lumb as she took her seemingly customary double win in the SB Veterans and SB Women’s competitions with an actual time of 24:55 and a Veteran’s Standard of +10:04. In the Women’s SB Series Hutson-Lumb moved to just four points behind Series leader Helen Tudor and narrowed the gap to Veteran’s third-placed rider Mark Stocks of Newport CC to 16 points, but only perseverance and a grim desire to finish saw those results materialise: “Battering into the headwind on Cotwall Bank once nearly had me heading for home, but I grovelled over a second time and was relieved to finish - a tough evening for it whether racing or marshalling”.

Things are much more assured in the SB Junior Series as Ben Southgate opened up an impressive lead of 108 points as he looks a shoo-in for the title. Southgate crossed the line in 46:13 and was looking forward to putting his feet up after a heavy studying load, succinctly stating: “I’m happy with how I did; now I can relax on holiday”.

Rather humorously Rich Smith who finished as third Veteran in +4:57 voiced the feelings of many at the post-race dissection with his tongue-in-cheek summary: “What's left of my soul left my body the second time up Cotwall Bank”!

Rain before the start for the second year running made for some fast times in Wrekinsport CC’s 25, Round 7 of the SB Sports Injuries Series as Tomos Hales took a strong win despite deliberately conserving his strength for the next evening’s Shropshire Championship 25 and two personal bests were set. Starting at Crudgington, riders first headed south to Shawbirch before a long trek north to Espley island and a fast spin down the Hodnet bypass to turn and retrace to Waters Upton. Hales took the maximum 26 points available in this bonus point round due to being the longest distance in the 2023 SB Series, extending his lead at the top of the Series to a comfortable 32 points as he posted 55 minutes 36 seconds on an overcast evening. Understandably with the Championship 25 in his mind he wasn’t quite going ‘full gas’, but took the win by 2:36 from Wrekinsport team mate Phil Roberts, another rider with one eye on the big prize 24 hours later. Hales stated: ”The Wrekinsport 25 Mile went well, luckily the rain stopped before the start. With another 25 mile event the next day I tried to hold some back. I was happy to take the win; and thanks to the Wrekinsport team for organising the event”.

Roberts rose to sixth spot in the SB Standings thanks to taking runner-up spot with a personal best 58:12, having had the benefit of SB Junior Series leader Ben Southgate starting a minute in front. As seems traditional in Wrekinsport club events after Roberts overtook him Southgate did what he seems to do best and put a huge spurt on towards the finish to get a flagging Roberts back, just un-lapping himself to finish three seconds ahead on the road in 59:09. This was Roberts’ longest time trial of the year, and understandably it took its toll towards the end with the effort expended: He commented: “What looked like it was going to be a damp evening turned out to be fast conditions. I had a lovely carrot to chase down in Ben, and pushed hard all the way to a 25 personal best. I have only been doing 10 mile time trials this year, so to push on for a 25 PB was a nice personal milestone. Great to see so many Wrekinsport members brave both the weather and the long course. A huge thanks to the marshals as well, there were lots out there giving great support at each junction”.

Southgate opened up his Junior Series lead to a huge 88 points thanks to taking third overall, and was the final rider to beat the magic 25mph/60 minute mark – with James Ingram agonisingly missing out after finishing in exactly an hour. Southgate has had to put studying first recently so has had limited chances to train, so was pleased with his effort given the circumstances, commenting: “It went rather well considering the lack of training from my GCSE’s, thankfully they are over now so solid training ahead”.

In the SB Veterans Series the win was taken by Ashley Kirkham in +1:07 thanks to a huge personal best Actual time of 1 hour six minutes exactly. This is the first time Kirkham has beaten his Veteran’s Standard at the distance, and he took advantage of the fast conditions to lop over seven minutes off his previous best, a huge achievement. He stated: “Pre-race conditions had initially made me regret signing up, but once I got going enjoyed it. 10 miles in my numbers were telling me I was going a bit too hard, but I felt good so decided to hang in as long as I could. Another 15 miles later and I still felt good and finished with a 7 minute+ personal best”.

Ben Southgate headed to the top of the Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport following Round 10. The 16 year-old was outpaced by 11 seconds by visiting rider James Gibney of West Midlands Police who took the Overall win in 22 minutes 50 seconds, but scored the maximum six points on offer for Wrekinsport riders in a close tussle with Phil Roberts. Southgate posted a fine 23:01 to push Roberts out by three seconds and overtook Tomos Hales by two points at the head of the table on an overcast evening that saw the return of a hampering wind missing from recent editions.

In the Road Bike Series there was a first entry from Deb Hutson-Lumb who took both the win in that competition and the Women’s Series too with a fine 26:32, with Mollie Croxon extending her lead at the top of the Women’s standings to 13 points. The close battle between Ellott Wills and David Seager at the top of the Road Bike Series saw Wills get the better of things this time by a narrow five seconds after crossing the line in 27:20, taking over sole lead at the top of the table by just one point.
