Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport - Round 5 2020

A truncated Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport came to a conclusion with Chris Halford sealing the Series with a perfect score - the maximum 30 points available across the five rounds; with a dead heat for the overall event win for the second week running. Revolutions Racing 16 year-old Henri Bedford and CC Bridgnorth rider Josh Whitehead both stopped the watch on 21 minutes 7 seconds on The Tiddly triangle circuit with powerful lunges for the finish line ahead of a 35-strong field, with another CC Bridgnorth rider Jonathan Mills-Keeling snaffling third place in an excellent 21:44.

But all eyes were on the battle for Gold as Halford put the finishing touches to that perfect score with a strong ride of 22 minutes exactly. Silver medallist Tomos Hales was out to spoil that finishing flourish having got closer to Halford’s times as the season has progressed, and nearly caused an upset with his closest finish to Halford all season – 22:05.

But these weren’t the only medals up for grabs as Phil Roberts made a last gasp lunge for the Bronze, with his 23:07 effort giving him four points and overhauling Rob Jackson by a solitary point to win that medal, which he stated at the finish line he had his heart set on, but couldn’t be sure if he’d done enough.

It was a last gasp win in the Road Bike Series too as club Junior Jack Inglis took the maximum six points on offer with a fine ride of 26:31 to push Derek Fleming down into the Silver medal slot right at the death, and with Darrell Biddulph just five seconds off Inglis’ pace he hauled himself into the Bronze position. The Road Bike category has been a real feature of the season, with 11 competitors riding with non-aero equipment, with an overall win from Hope Factory Racing’s Max Greensill in a very impressive 22:52.

But the close of the Series saw more medals being settled, with Halford taking a second Gold thanks to his Round 4 effort of 21:09, with Hales again the Silver medallist thanks to that final ride and Adam Mumford taking Bronze in 23:04 set in the same event as Halford’s Gold-medal ride. In the Women’s Bethan Till has hugely improved as the season has progressed and she took Gold as fastest female with a PB 25:51 recorded on the evening, with Liz White gaining Silver in her first appearance in a 10 this year in 28:49. Another feature of the season has been the sheer number of first-time time triallists, and Angela Boycott ended that maiden season with Bronze in 31:19 recorded in Round 4. Meanwhile it was a head-to-head between the club’s two Juniors with Jack Inglis taking Gold in the final event on what was a very fast evening, with Henry Fleming winning Silver.

The Juniors helped themselves to more medals in the Handicap competition which rewards improvement, with Inglis making it a hat-trick of Gold medals whilst Fleming made it a brace of Silver. But if one rider has improved most over the short season it’s Clare O’Donnell, who not only took Women’s Handicap Gold but the Overall Handicap Gold too. There were familiar names in the other medal positions with Derek Fleming taking Overall Handicap Silver and Phil Roberts the Bronze equivalent. Meanwhile Angela Boycott also took home a second medal in a satisfying first season, capturing Women’s Handicap Silver, with Bethan Till taking the Bronze.

Report on Round 4 of the SB Sports Injuries Series = Helen Blake moves to the top of the SB Women's Series.

    Wrekinsport CC 25

The only bonus point round of the 2020 SB Sports Injuries Series brought the leading riders out for Wrekinsport CC’s 25, taking place on the A442 and A53 between Shawbirch and Tern Hill – with the Series leader registering a PB and Dan Watts being squeezed out by a solitary second for the second event in a row. A sultry afternoon produced some fabulous times, although riders did have to cope with excess traffic diverted off the A41 due to a closure at Sandford Bridge which cost more than one rider time.

The overall win was taken by Wrexham RC’s Benjamin Goodfellow, showing an excellent return to form with a strong ride of 52 minutes 37 seconds in his first race of 2020 after an accident kept him off the bike. He revealed: “Not only had I had the break from racing Covid had caused, but just as racing was resuming I broke my collarbone badly. I set out too hard and paced badly, leaving me struggling in the heat over the second half. As the average power was dropping I had to dig deep. Hitting the line I was glad it as over. The result was a 25 speed and power PB, but I am sure I can improve again over the remaining part of the season”.

Goodfellow wasn’t the only rider to record a PB with Tim Beardmore taking the maximum 26 points on offer in both the Overall and the Veteran’s SB Championships with a fine 53:18 – but it could have been so much better if not for a hold up of over 10 seconds at Tern Hill due to traffic that nearly cost him that County win in his first 25 of the truncated season. The Nova Raider explained: “It was so good to be racing a 25 again; the distance and the course suit my strengths. I had good vibes out on the course, and knew I was on for a good time despite a small hold up at Tern Hill which was in gridlock when I got to the turn. I was delighted to knock over a minute off my PB. Yet again massive thanks to all at Wrekinsport for organising, and well done to all who raced”.

Watts meanwhile was philosophic about being the bridesmaid for the second time in a row by a second as the reigning Champion narrowed the advantage of Series leader Henri Bedford to just four points with a great effort of 53:19. Watts post-race comments were tongue-in-cheek: “Another race missing out on victory by seconds, I should probably think about slipping the timekeepers some money for future races! I didn’t have a bad ride to be fair, but Tim straight up out paced me with a stellar ride. I’m happy to get a busy block of initial races out the way time for some rest before the next races”.

Things weren’t so close in the Veterans with Beardmore posting a solid Veteran’s plus of +16:26, with nearest challenger Chris Halford, who was riding to Wrekinsport 25 Championship Gold despite suffering with a bad back, pushing Bedford out by 24 seconds with a good time of 55:24 which converted to +12:16 on Standard. A bad back was the least of Halford’s worries though as a dropped chain forced an unscheduled stop, as he explained: “I enjoyed the course, but I had to stop and get off after Tern Hill due to my chain coming off. Some really quick times posted”.

16 year-old Henri Bedford remains at the top of the Overall standings and almost has a successful retention of his Junior SB title within sight as he moved up to 66 points Overall and 86 in the Junior SB Series – the maximum tally possible. The youngster is having a fabulous season, breaking PB after PB and this race was no different despite a number of hold-ups due to the unusual traffic pattern: “It was good to get a PB at my first 25 of the year even though the weather conditions weren’t favourable and the traffic was quite busy at the islands - thanks to Wrekinsport CC for putting on yet another amazing event”.

In the Women’s SB Series Oswestry Paragon’s Helen Tudor made her first appearance of the season in this Championship with a good ride of 1:10:26 despite still getting used to a new bike which is requiring positional tinkering. She beat off a challenge from Wrekinsport’s Liz White who won the club’s 25 mile Women’s Championship with her 1:15:40 effort. Tudor stated: “Riding a 25 was a shock to the system, I had a new bike three weeks ago and the set up is not right yet and I suffered because of it. It’s great to see so much enthusiasm for time trials at Wrekinsport again, thanks to all involved”. It was left to another of Wrekinsport’s females to move into the SB Women’s Series lead with Helen Blake now holding an eight point advantage over Tudor.

    Wrekinsport CC Hannah Phipps-Jones 20.7

The curse of road works struck again with two sets of lights affecting both first choice and the reserve course for the Wrekinsport Hannah Phipps-Jones Handicap, with a second course change to two laps of The Tiddly circuit requiring the event to be brought forward and some frantic field rearrangement to ensure all the riders would finish and have time to get back to HQ by official sunset at 20:40 – although the bizarre conditions had other ideas of when things were going to get dark.

CC Bridgnorth RWG rider Will Lewis took the win in 44 minutes 18 seconds by the narrowest of possible margins – one second, from reigning SB Sports Injuries Series Champion Dan Watts after being split by just three seconds at the 10 mile marker, showing how evenly matched the pair paced their races. Lewis’ plans for the season were ripped up due to Covid, and so some readjustment saw him trying to find a new outlet to gain fitness, as he explained: “I originally had plans to race competitively in National road races this year, but they went out of the window due to the outbreak. I needed a new focus to maintain some fitness and training for next season. A couple of work colleagues persuaded me to enter the Wednesday night time trial. I gave it a go not expecting a lot and surprised myself. It’s a great event for cyclists of all abilities, and well organised for a small fee. I hope to be back for the remaining events and possibly some open events. Who knows maybe a couple of course records! Its great clubs are now allowed to put on these sorts of events for riders”.

Looming thunderclouds thankfully held their contents within for the entire event despite protesting regularly on a humid, sultry evening, accompanied initially by the lightest of breezes - but that was all to change midway through the second lap when a vicious wind sprang up which made bike handling problematical. Riders then had a second race on their hands to get back to HQ at Shawbirch under an almost pitch black sky frequently lit up by sheet lightning, with the incredible sight of anything to the north of Shawbirch island staying dry whilst conditions to the south were so torrential if an ark had floated past it would not have been surprising.

I was a case of ‘almost’ for Watts as the narrow loss still saw him take 18 points in defence of his title, with an additional five mile blast back to HQ to try and miss the gathering storm. He stated: “I didn’t know what the bigger prize was, winning the event or racing back to the HQ after to avoid the storm and subsequent rain! In the end I missed out on the win by the narrowest of margins, but I avoided the rain, so half a win in my books. I’m happy to be back racing and in close competition, it keeps it very interesting for the shortened season”.

Taking third spot Nova Raiders’ Dean Callister was clearly affected by the worsening conditions judging by his split time – at 10 miles he was just three seconds off Watts’ pace, but lost a further 13 seconds on lap two after taking a battering which made things down the finishing straight a very tough deal with many competitors, clinging onto the bike for dear life whilst trying to stay upright. Eventually crossing the line in 44:35 he commented: “I was pleased with my time on a very strange evening of weather. I enjoyed the course, but for some unexpected high winds on the second lap which was tough. Glad we all missed the storm, thanks to Wrekinsport for putting another great evening of racing on”.

In the Veterans Chris Halford took the honours for the promoting club after making his first appearance of the Series this year, with a fine +10:54 for clear win 37 seconds ahead of Series leader Tim Beardmore spite fighting to control his bike on the second lap. Halford stated: “The first lap was OK, but the second lap was a real handful with the conditions. It was definitely nine miles too long for me”! Beardmore meanwhile was suffering due to the effects of dehydration over the two previous days of incessant heat which had triggered the post-race deluge, and knew he hadn’t put in his best effort: “It was not my best race. I think working in the heat and humidity for the previous two days had taken its toll somewhat. The first lap went OK, but the wind really picked up on the second lap which made controlling the bike tricky in places. I also got stuck behind a load of traffic for a couple of miles on the way up to Epsley island, but hey, that's racing! I was hoping to go sub 45 minutes but it was not to be. Still very happy to get second in the Veterans and pick up some good points and it could have been much worse if the "Biblical" rain had come an hour earlier. Massive thanks to all at Wrekinsport for organizing another event”.

Normally challenging for maximum Veterans points Beardmore’s club mate Deb Hutson-Lumb had to be content with just the Women’s win and third Veteran’s place thanks to a decision not to use her regular time trial bike, still posting a very efficient time of 53:54. She explained: “With storms threatening and not wanting two bikes to clean I decided to ride this on my road bike with clip-ons. Very pleased with the first lap managing to keep focus on power but got a bit distracted by the rising cross wind on the second lap. I was very pleased overall; and good to get practice on a course that features in the VTTA National in September. Thanks again to everyone involved in making these events happen”.

16 year old Henri Bedford had actually beaten Tim Beardmore at the 10 mile point, crossing the line for the first time two seconds ahead but lost a bit of time being buffeted by conditions to take the Junior win and the maximum 60 points available over the three rounds in a sterling defence of his SB Junior title. His 45:49 saw off a challenge from Revolutions Racing team mate Harry Corney, making his first appearance in the Series with a fine 54:02. Bedfordstated: “I enjoyed doing two laps of the Tiddly course, even though the weather took a turn for the worst on the second lap but luckily the rain held off. Big thanks to Wrekinsport for putting on the event and to all the marshals out on the course”.

Wrekinsport were running their Hannah Phipps-Jones Handicap within the event which usually rewards the most improved rider – and that went to Clare O’Donnell in an adjusted 39:24 after she has lowered her PB consistently week after week. O’Donnell beat Derek Fleming into the Silver medal spot with Phil Roberts taking Bronze to pick up her first-ever cycling medal. She commented: “I can’t believe it! My old PE teacher would never believe it.  I’m super, super chuffed”.
