An event record turnout got the newly renamed Little Sweetpea Gardens/BBR Opticians Hill Climb Series off to a flying start on a glorious evening; although one thing stayed the same in Wrekinsport CC’s Willomoor Bank climb – the winner. Fishface Cycles Jonny Morris just missed out on his own course record of 3:24.48 by just over three seconds thanks to a slight cross-wind that drifted across the lower part of the final ramp, heading up a quality field of 44 riders. Morris stopped the watch on 3 minutes, 27.99 seconds, roared on by a noisy, exuberant but socially distanced crowd lining the final bend, which offers an unequalled view of the race; and which gave the finish timekeeper big clues of when a rider was about to make an appearance from some distance away.

Morris was over six seconds clear of former professional Liam Holohan, who took the honours amongst the County riders and showed the strength of that winning effort, and enjoyed his evening out – although with an eye on some greatly improved youngsters, stating: “The Wrekin course is become a firm favourite of mine, and I have worked out a way of riding it that suits me. So pleased I have managed to keep my run going another year. Some of the youngsters have improved loads over the last two years, so we shall have to see what happens next year. Thanks as always to everyone that took the time to make the event happen”.

Holohan started the 2020 hill climb season exactly as he started the 2019 version – with the maximum 20 points available for affiliated riders with a great effort of 3:34.71, pushing out Wrexham-based Christopher Mann by nearly two seconds. Holohan’s wiry frame is made for climbing, but a stop-start season and busy personal life meant he was by no means confident: “I had no expectations coming in to the event, training has been sporadic to say the least - with two very young children, no child care and a business to run it’s been a case of squeezing in a ride when I can. I feel privileged just to be able to pin a number on this year. After I finished my ride I stood with the crowd to cheer on the rest of the competitors, it was a fantastic atmosphere and was great to be around so many other enthusiastic cyclists”.

County runner-up spot went to CC Bridgnorth’s Will Lewis, who threw himself across the line in 3:45.56 – and clearly pushed himself into the red zone with his effort to haul himself up the evil final ramp, which can catch out many riders if they have taken the approach a little over-zealously. He stated: “Thank you for another good mid week event, it made my lungs burn and some black stars appear in my eyes at the end! All in all it was good to get out and see people I haven’t seen for a while”.

Former Course Record holder Dan Watts acknowledged that he wasn’t at peak form, missing out on his 2018 effort, the last time he attempted the climb by 17 seconds. Despite this 3:49.77 is still a mightily respectable effort, with Watts commenting: “The first hill climb is always a shock to the system, but it’s always a pleasure to start the Wrekinsport hill climb as that’s where hill climbing started for me aged 17. It wasn’t my best ride up the climb, but the form is certainly enough to be carrying forward”.

A huge feature of this format is the sheer number of Juniors it attracts, with a teenager’s typical light weight being a huge advantage up inclines. Heading up eight youngsters was Halesowen A&CC’s Tomos Pattinson, who posted an excellent 3:45.69 for 6th spot Overall just fractions behind Lewis, and he was more than pleased with his attempt: “I really enjoyed the climb; there was fantastic support and a tremendous atmosphere. Thank you to all involved in the organisation”.

Taking the Junior honours for the County was Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ James Satoor, who took the maximum 20 points to head up the Junior Series and expressed satisfaction with his climb: “It was good to start the hill climb season at The Wrekin, it's a tough climb and the legs were a bit dead, but it’s good to be leading the Junior Series. Thanks to Wrekinsport for putting on a well organised event”!

With a number of photographers taking the opportunity to capture action shots on the climb Morris’ partner Hannah Pearson made it a happy journey home after recovering from the pain fest by taking the Women’s victory in 4:55.49 – although she knew all about it for a while. Her comments capture the reactions of many who start off strongly and suffer for it: “I think my face in the photos says it all – I went off to hard in the bottom section, lesson learnt. I’m looking forward to next year and hopefully pacing it better”.

Wrekinsport’s 2019 Silver medallist Beth Till took the maximum 20 points in the Women’s category with a fine effort of 5:29.52, winning Women’s Gold in Wrekinsport’s club championship taking place within this event, with Tomos Hales taking Overall Gold in 3:59.14. He stated: “I’m very happy with that, I had some tough competition this year. Great to have the hill climbs on, and even better to get in the three minutes – just”!

After a year off 2018 Veteran’s Champion Mark Hammond was immediately back to his winning ways, taking victory in the Veteran’s Championship in 4:00.81, over 17 seconds ahead of Veteran’s runner-up Scott Palmer, making his Series debut: Hammond has clearly seen the benefits of lock down training with a huge personal best which sounds an ominous signal to other competitors in the Over-40 category. He stated: “One of my favourite climbs, I felt I paced the climb well and knocked 13 seconds off my PB. A great turn out - and well organised by Wrekinsport”.

Palmer meanwhile lost some time clipping in, a temporary requirement under Covid regulations meaning no pusher-off, and one many riders would do well to practice for race situations. He posted a fine 4:18.30 to beat off a challenge from CC Bridgnorth club mate Paul Bailey, stating: “I’m new to the hill climb scene, other than some hill attempts on Strava, The Wrekin climb being the only the second time I’ve ridden up it. I struggled to clip in at the start and panicked; so I went off way too hard, I just blew at the steep climb, nothing left. But I enjoyed it”!

Report on the club's Open 10 which was Round 3 of the Friction Hydraulics Series

    Wrekinsport CC 10

It was a race of two halves as Storm Ellen took its toll on Round 3 of The Friction and Hydraulic Services Series, Wrekinsport CC’s 10 based on the normally fast Hodnet by-pass. Seeing its first use since 2016, the D10/23 course can catch the unwary rider out as it turns directly into the prevailing wind just at the toughest part of the course – the half mile either side of Hodnet island where the gradient rises. Gains made on the longer ‘out’ leg to the turn at Tern Hill island saw riders being bowled along – but then having to fight their way back with some reporting struggling to control their bikes and watching the mph dip, with best efforts limited to 18mph amongst the pack.

The event was won overall by Bridgnorth-based semi-professional George Mills-Keeling, riding for Ribble-Weldtite Pro Cycling, the only rider to dip below the 20 minute mark on the toughest of afternoons with 19 minutes 52 seconds, just 12 seconds off equalling Ryan Perry’s 2015 Course Record. To beat 30mph average in such hostile conditions says everything about the quality of this ride, in what Mills-Keeling described as “Some crazy, windy conditions” He elaborated: “It was a tough one, the wind was a killer on the way home. I felt good, but I went a little bit easier on the way out to compensate for the massive head wind on the way home”!

SCCA Private Member Kieran Morris took the honours amongst the affiliated riders with a strong effort of 20:42, with teenagers occupying the Top 3 spots; showing that coping with the conditions was a youngster’s game. There was a hint of sadness in Morris’ post-race comments at the end of a truncated season – even more so for the 19 year-old, who revealed: “I struggled from the off. I still had the previous week’s triathlon in my legs. A great course and a fabulous ride by George - on a windy day I even managed to find the rain! Thank you to everyone involved, it means the world to be able to race again; and well done riders - my last SCCA event this year as I am off to university”.

Making a first appearance in the Friction Series for 2020 Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ 17 year-old Ben Pierce, who shocked Junior Series leader Henri Bedford to steal the maximum 60 points on offer in the Junior Series as well as snaffle the County runners-up spot with a fine ride of 21:03, 9 seconds ahead of Bedford despite the Revolutions Racing rider posting a personal best 21:12. Pierce stated: “A great event. It was hard going on the way back but I’m still pleased with my result”.

Bedford wasn’t overly concerned however thanks to that PB, stretching his lead at the top of the Friction Junior Series, and moving up into joint lead of the Overall Friction Series, tying with Nova Raiders’ Tim Beardmore. The 16 year-old stated: “I enjoyed the lovely tailwind as I think everyone did on the way out to Tern Hill. On the way back was just a matter of hanging on and trying to get a good time. Well done to Ben for winning the Juniors, and a big thanks to Wrekinsport for hosting the event”.

Beardmore lost sole lead of the Series after finishing 5th County rider in 21:33, ironically pushed out by team mate Dean Callister by 8 seconds. Another team mate Deb Hutson-Lumb did similar to Beardmore in the Friction Veterans Series with the two entering the race tied at the top of that Series, but with Hutson-Lumb registering a fine +5:28 she earned five points more that Beardmore who was runner-up with +5:07, beating Wrekinsport’s Chris Halford into 3rd by 6 seconds. Beardmore was still pleased with his efforts however having had to fight his bike most of the way around: “The wind made it a very tough race on what is usually a fast course. Controlling the bike was difficult in the wind, especially on the return leg. I think my pacing was good given the conditions. I was happy to get runners-up in the Veterans. Well done to everyone who raced for staying upright, and a big thanks to Wrekinsport for organising another event”.

Hutson-Lumb had no such handling issues thanks to a new bike, although she did have an unscheduled stop at the turn. Her 24:04 effort was just 7 seconds off equalling Hetty Niblett’s Women’s Course Record of 23:57 set in that 2016 event as she beat off the dual challenge from Hafren CC’s Louise Hurdley and Wrekinsport’s Bethan Till who tied for the runner-up spot amongst the females in 27:24, showing how good Hutson-Lumb’s ride was. She revealed: “I was very pleased with my ride despite the wind and having to stop and unclip behind a car at the turn. My new bike felt very stable in the breeze, and with a few races in my legs now I was better able to keep the power on. That said the last mile after the Hodnet roundabout was tough – my legs were screaming to ease off and I was glad to finish. Another fabulous Wrekinsport event, and thanks to everyone involved”.

Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport - Round 5 2020

A truncated Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport came to a conclusion with Chris Halford sealing the Series with a perfect score - the maximum 30 points available across the five rounds; with a dead heat for the overall event win for the second week running. Revolutions Racing 16 year-old Henri Bedford and CC Bridgnorth rider Josh Whitehead both stopped the watch on 21 minutes 7 seconds on The Tiddly triangle circuit with powerful lunges for the finish line ahead of a 35-strong field, with another CC Bridgnorth rider Jonathan Mills-Keeling snaffling third place in an excellent 21:44.

But all eyes were on the battle for Gold as Halford put the finishing touches to that perfect score with a strong ride of 22 minutes exactly. Silver medallist Tomos Hales was out to spoil that finishing flourish having got closer to Halford’s times as the season has progressed, and nearly caused an upset with his closest finish to Halford all season – 22:05.

But these weren’t the only medals up for grabs as Phil Roberts made a last gasp lunge for the Bronze, with his 23:07 effort giving him four points and overhauling Rob Jackson by a solitary point to win that medal, which he stated at the finish line he had his heart set on, but couldn’t be sure if he’d done enough.

It was a last gasp win in the Road Bike Series too as club Junior Jack Inglis took the maximum six points on offer with a fine ride of 26:31 to push Derek Fleming down into the Silver medal slot right at the death, and with Darrell Biddulph just five seconds off Inglis’ pace he hauled himself into the Bronze position. The Road Bike category has been a real feature of the season, with 11 competitors riding with non-aero equipment, with an overall win from Hope Factory Racing’s Max Greensill in a very impressive 22:52.

But the close of the Series saw more medals being settled, with Halford taking a second Gold thanks to his Round 4 effort of 21:09, with Hales again the Silver medallist thanks to that final ride and Adam Mumford taking Bronze in 23:04 set in the same event as Halford’s Gold-medal ride. In the Women’s Bethan Till has hugely improved as the season has progressed and she took Gold as fastest female with a PB 25:51 recorded on the evening, with Liz White gaining Silver in her first appearance in a 10 this year in 28:49. Another feature of the season has been the sheer number of first-time time triallists, and Angela Boycott ended that maiden season with Bronze in 31:19 recorded in Round 4. Meanwhile it was a head-to-head between the club’s two Juniors with Jack Inglis taking Gold in the final event on what was a very fast evening, with Henry Fleming winning Silver.

The Juniors helped themselves to more medals in the Handicap competition which rewards improvement, with Inglis making it a hat-trick of Gold medals whilst Fleming made it a brace of Silver. But if one rider has improved most over the short season it’s Clare O’Donnell, who not only took Women’s Handicap Gold but the Overall Handicap Gold too. There were familiar names in the other medal positions with Derek Fleming taking Overall Handicap Silver and Phil Roberts the Bronze equivalent. Meanwhile Angela Boycott also took home a second medal in a satisfying first season, capturing Women’s Handicap Silver, with Bethan Till taking the Bronze.
