The perishing evenings continued in the Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport 10 as riders shivered their way around the course – with a dropping wind seeing Tomos Hales pull off a victory over Chris Halford to set up a tie at the top of the Series standings. Off 21 places behind Halford that difference in conditions was decisive as Hales stopped the watch on 21 minutes 26 seconds to take the win, 11 seconds ahead of Halford. Hales knocked 20 seconds off his Round 3 effort whilst Halford went back 3 seconds in conditions he is known not to favour. First of the visiting riders amongst a 39-strong field was Jonathan Mills-Keeling of Bridgnorth CC who captured 3^rd spot in 22:15.

In the Road Bike Series Dave Slater took another maximum six points to see off Stuart Wortley, stretching his lead to four points after crossing the line in 29:37. Bridgnorth CC Junior Nathan Fulwood, making his first appearance of the season stormed round to take Overall Road Bike honours in a superb 23:48 – good enough for 11^th spot.

In the Women’s Series Clare Cotterill also stretched her lead to four points with a solid 27:45, beating off a challenge from Victoria Doran by 2:05, but it was another young visitor Grace Lister of Cero Cycle Division who impressed with a fabulous effort of 22:26 to take 5^th spot Overall, showing the strength of the Junior riders.

The course record was smashed in Round 5 of The SB Sports Injuries Series as George Mills-Keeling became the first rider to dip under the magic 40 minute mark over two laps of the lumpy Shawbirch – Cotwall Bank circuit in Wrekinsport CC’s Hannah Phipps-Jones 19 – despite it being held on a significantly chilly evening. Mills-Keeling was racing here for his amateur team Bridgnorth CC, but is normally found riding for professional outfit AVC Aix En Provence. The 19 year-old breezed around the 19 miles in 39 minutes 53 seconds after being the fastest rider through the 10 mile point in 20:46, maintaining an average speed of over 28½ miles per hour.

Mills-Keeling’s nearest challenger was SB Series leader Henri Bedford, who was just 38 seconds off the pace at the end of the first lap and finished on 41:05. Riders were assisted by not having to battle through the wind, on a very calm evening, with Bedford stretching his lead of both the Overall and Junior SB Series as a result of this ride. He stated: “I loved the extra challenge of another lap on the Wrekinsport course. The weather wasn’t too kind, but it was good fun and I felt smooth. Well done to George for the win and course record, and thanks to Wrekinsport CC for putting on this event”.

Bedford pushed out another Bridgnorth CC rider, Nathan Fullwood in the Junior race, with the 16 year-old making his Series debut with a very creditable 47:52, assisting Bedford to put extra space between himself and Harry Corney to stretch his Junior lead to 20 points, with the Market Drayton CC rider 54 seconds back from Fullwood. Overall Bedford beat off the attentions of Nova Raiders’ Dean Callister, who finished third in 41:32. Callister moved up to Overall runner-up spot in the Overall Series, although he has some tough ground to make up with Bedford now holding a 26 point lead. He stated: “I was happy to take third considering how cold it was! Shivering on the start line is never ideal but it was the same for all. The second lap started to bite a bit after twice up Cotwall Bank - thanks to Wrekinsport and all the marshals for putting the event on”.

In the SB Women’s Series it was another debutante making an immediate impression, with Emma Horne stretching herself from the club 10’s she has competed in so far. Horne stopped the watch on 52:18 to beat Wrekisnport club mate Clare Cotterill by 2:32 – and found herself enjoying the extra distance, commenting: “I really enjoyed my first 19 mile time trial with Wrekinsport despite the cold!  I surprised myself with finding it easier than I expected, and in some ways easier than the 10 mile one – I was very grateful for the tips on the starting line given to me by Rob Jackson which definitely helped my pacing.  I was wrapped up more than most but still struggled – I felt some spots of rain but it just about held off. It would be great to see a few more women so we’re not quite so outnumbered - everyone is very friendly and supportive, so I’d encourage others to have a go like me”!

In the SB Veterans Series it was another Wrekinsport rider, Chris Halford, who took the win and consolidated his lead at the top of the Veteran’s standings, now holding an 18 point lead over George Mills-Keeling’s father Jonathan, who ended his evening as third Veteran in +7:36. Mills-Keeling was beaten by a rider returning from injury, Tim Beardmore, whose Standard was 13 seconds betterl but there was no touching Halford who ended his evening on +8:21 – although he nearly didn’t get to ride thanks to a wheel issue, as he explained: “I’m not sure whether to thank or curse team mate Tomas Hales who got me a spare quick release after forgetting mine – I was still shivering the following day”!

Wrekinsport riders were in competition for The Hannah Phipps-Jones Trophy, based on handicap and rewarding best improvement. Taking Gold was Steve Porter-Knott in an adjusted 40:14, 11 seconds in front of Victoria Doran and 59 seconds ahead of Tomos Hales.

Following a discussion before the HPJ19 it has been retrospectively decided to open up a specific Women's points category for the Decathlon Series Evening 10's. Given the much greater interest in time trialling among Wrekinsport females this is something new to aim at. Points per race are scored as follows, all Evening Club 10's apply for this competition, all rounds count towards the points tally so get active!

A decidedly chilly evening saw times generally go back a notch in Round 3 of the Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport, but there were some familiar names at the top of the standings. With riders shivering to take their start the effort required to get around the lumpy Shawbirch – Cotwall Bank circuit soon saw them warming up, with Revolutions Racing’s Henri Bedford making it three wins in three events – albeit with a slower time. The 17 year-old charged around in 20 minutes 50 seconds, 25 seconds slower than his Round 2 effort, showing graphically how cold conditions can hamper times.

Bedford took the win by beating the same Top 4 as the previous week, although how each coped with the tougher conditions saw a bunching at the head. Taking the maximum six points on offer for Wrekisnport members Chris Halford lost 10 seconds on his Round 2 effort after crossing the line in 21:34, 12 seconds ahead of team mate Tomos Hales who is pushing the current Series Champion to the limits this season. Hales’ 21:46 saw a 13 second loss, showing how closely this pair are matched, whilst visiting Bridgnorth CC rider Jonathan Mills-Keeling was one of the rare improvements, lopping 9 seconds off his Round 2 time with 21:58, showing he is coming into form.

In the Road Bike category it was a first time trial of the season for Dan Watts, only recently returned from duty in The Falklands and playing a bit of catch up with his form. Watts still managed 23:08 and would surely have wiped the floor with this on his dedicated time trial bike, but despite this was still 2:26 clear of runner-up Chris Riley of Paramount CRT. In Wrekinsport’s Road Bike Series Dave Slater has so far put up a perfect claim to the Trophy with another maximum six points in 29:11, 12 seconds down but enough to stretch his lea over Stuart Wortley who finished in 32:53.

With the events gaining popularity amongst Junior riders Bedford took a commanding win from Market Drayton CC’s Harry Corney, who recorded 24:01, with Wrekinsport’s Ben Southgate taking the honours for the club in 27:35. The events are also seeing more females try their hand too, with Emma Horne and Clare Cotterill having a terrific battle, with Horne taking the win in 26:50 by 25 seconds over the improving Cotterill.

Henri Bedford took another fine win in Round 2 of The Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport despite gathering gloom on a dull evening. Helped by a rare easterly wind that aids riders up the 1.8 mile drag of Cotwall Bank Bedford shaved two seconds off from his Round 1 time despite the chill of an evening where the mercury steadily sank below 12ºC, with warmth only added on rare peeks from the sun. Bedford is easily recognisable in his exaggerated ‘Preying Mantis’ position, with a superbly locked back that means all the effort is going through the pedals. His 20 minute 34 second ride saw a fearsome charge for the finish line as he pushed Chris Halford into the runner-up spot by 50 seconds.

Halford had a steady start to the season but looked back to his familiar form with his 21:24 ride, seeing off a strong challenge from club mate Tomos Hales by 9 seconds. Hales had beaten Halford by four seconds in Round 1 but with Halford lopping a huge 57 seconds off his previous week’s effort the benefit of that easterly wind was clearly demonstrated – always the best direction for fast times on the Shawbirch – Cotwall Bank circuit. This locks the pair in joint first place in the Series in a tussle that is likely to last the season.

Best of the road bike racers was Paramount CRT’s Chris Riley, powering to 19^th spot overall in a great field of 43 riders in 24:50, showing the passion for time trialling now lockdown restrictions are beginning to ease. But Dave Slater took the maximum six points on offer for Wrekinsport riders to stretch his lead at the top of the Road Bike Series. 

Amongst a fine turnout of females Alison Dockney of Market Drayton CC powered home to a convincing win in 24:08, with Wrekinsport’s Clare Cotterill taking the plaudits for the club as she gets faster and faster as the season has bedded in, stopping the watch on 26:55. Bedford was fastest of the Juniors too, with closest challenger Luka Stolic who knocked 30 seconds off his first attempt the previous week to end the evening on 25:37.
