The penultimate, 14^th round of the Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport saw Tomos Hales put the title within touching distance after a win of 12 seconds over the rider he has been battling it out with all season, Chris Halford. Hales coped best with a roaring southerly wind that made conditions tough on the leg from the top of Cotwall Bank to Shawbirch, stopping the watch on 21 minutes 50 seconds to open up a five point gap at the top of the standings. With six points for a win Hales holds the cards and as long as he finishes the final round he is guaranteed at least to share the trophy.

Halford took the runner-up spot on the evening in 22:02, seeing off Stourbridge Velo’s Darren Shaw who equalled his 10 mile personal best with 22:45. Hales and Halford aren’t the only riders to be scrapping over medals with Rob Jackson taking 4^th on the evening in 23 minutes exactly to claw back a point from Phil Roberts who was nine seconds slower. Roberts is almost certain of the Bronze medal but Jackson delayed that surety by a week by pipping Roberts.

One medal was taken in the Women’s Series thanks to Clare O’Donnell recording a course best 30:47 to see off a rider who has been challenging for Gold for much of the season, Victoria Doran. O’Donnell took Women’s Bronze, with Doran left at a four point disadvantage to Clare Cotterill, who stretched her lead to four points with a fine 29:04. None of them had an answer for Nova Raiders’ Deb Huson-Lumb however as she showed her class with a 24:12 effort to take 9^th spot Overall amongst a 21-strong field.

In the Road Bike Series Stuart Wortley took maximum points in 31:15 to seal an emphatic Series win, taken in Round 12 but since opened up to 31 points, but hadn’t got an answer for first-time rider Nick Roberts who posted a very respectable 27:11.

Chris Halford narrowed the gap at the top of the Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport, with four points now the margin to the top of the table in a close battle between the pair in Round 13. Halford took the win by the narrow margin of seven seconds in 21 minutes 31 seconds on a glorious evening where fast times were the order of the day. The pair have had a season-long battle for supremacy and seem to have spurred each other to grater heights thanks to the friendly competition.

Meanwhile Phil Roberts took third spot thanks to a personal best 22:49; just seeing off Stourbridge Velo’s Scott O’Neill by three seconds, with team mate Darren Shaw a further two seconds back in an event that saw an impressive five riders turn out from a club not exactly on the doorstep. 30 riders took the line – although unusually only 27 finished thanks to a variety of mishaps including mechanicals and going off course.

In the Road Bike Series Gold medallist Stuart Wortley made it a lap of honour as he knocked an impressive 1:19 off his Round 12 time in 31:03 to see off the attentions of Stephen Porter-Knott despite him improving by 1:37, highlighting the favourable conditions.

In the Women’s Series Clare Cotterill eased away from Victoria Doran to make it a two point gap with two events to go. Cotterill stopped the watch on 28:58, a 1:23 bettering of her Round 12 time, despite Doran setting a personal best 29:29.

Tomos Hales opened up a five point gap as he took over the lead of the Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport in Round 12 – with the former Series leader Chris Halford sitting it out on the sidelines. Recovering from a knee operation, Halford could only watch as Hales took the win in 22 minutes 9 seconds on an evening that saw many riders go back from their Round 11 marks. With three rounds to go that lead may well prove decisive in the destination of the Evening 10 Trophy.

One rider who wasn’t going backwards was Stourbridge Velo’s Darren Shaw who set a personal best after dipping below the 23 minute mark for he first time. Telford based Shaw is a regular at these events and was well pleased with taking runner-up spot in 22:45, seeing off Rich Smith in 23:06 who also improved by 28 seconds over his Round 11 effort.

The first medal of the Series was settled in the Road Bike category with Stuart Wortley taking Gold that’s to taking the maximum six points on offer with his 32:22 beating Stephen Porter-Knott who finished in 34:27. Wortley has been doggedly pursuing this title all season and was finally rewarded with three rounds remaining.

In the Women’s Series the deadlock at the top between Clare Cotterill and Victoria Doran was broken thanks to just three seconds, with Cotterill taking the win amongst Wrekinsport members to pull ahead by one point thanks to her 30:21 effort. This has been the closest of battles, but Cotterill had no answer for the Overall Women’s winner, Nova Raiders’ Deb Hutson-Lumb who showed her quality with a fantastic 24:08 to take 11^th spot Overall from a 23-strong field.

A fine turnout of 14 teams took the line for Round 7 of the UK ICT 2-Up Championship as riders faced a lumpy test on Wrekinsport's Shawbirch – Cotwell Bank circuit on a scorching evening. The promoting club took top billing as Tomos Hales and Phil Roberts teamed up for the first time to take victory by 10 seconds with a fine effort of 21 minutes 36 seconds, pushing out the pair who have been leading the Series for some time – Nova Raiders' Graeme Donnell and Andrew Lacon. Hales' tongue-in-cheek comments referred to the size difference between the pairing, which is significant: “I was very happy to take the win. Phil was a great partner and an even better wind block! We work well together and I believe we could go even quicker. Thanks for everyone helping out on a very hot night”.

Roberts meanwhile revealed that this race had been a long-term target, and having finished third or fourth amongst his team mates in solo efforts most of the season a maiden win was a feather in the cap after seeing Ian Bond and Chris Halford take third just a second off Donnell and Lacon's pace: “Tomos was on great form and it was nice to help contribute to a win. We having been eyeing up this event for a while, so it was great to deliver as a team – a great feeling to take my first win in a Wrekinsport event. Credit to Ian, Chris and the Nova lads for such a close event, I'm looking forwards to teaming up with Tomos again”.

Missing out on that win was on Donnell and Lacon's minds, but they were delighted to finally seal the Overall Championship with a round to spare having raced and won the previous evening at Ludlow in pursuit of this goal. Their 21:46 mark was enough to put them in an unassailable lead with the vast majority of medals all to play for in the final round. Donnell stated: “This is only second time we’ve raced this course and we managed to knock 30 seconds plus off our previous time. A slightly more technical course, and valuable seconds were lost by me on the turns which led us to being well beaten into second by Tomos and Phil: chapeaux. As always in sport and life, the silver lining is that we managed to grab the Series Gold. In truth I was dragged round the course 95% of the time; and all credit to my partner: one hell of a bike rider. A fantastic competition and well organised by all the teams”.

Lacon meanwhile had hoped to seal Gold with a win, but it was not to be. Nevertheless he was pleased to finally put the destination of the 2-Up Trophies in no doubt: “We were hoping for a win to seal the Series but that was taken with a strong performance by Tomos and Phil on their home course. We had a good ride, but the over 90kg club wasn't in our favour this evening! I was still happy to pick up points, and another strong ride by Graeme. We are really happy with the Series win, it was a target for us this year and we worked well as a team to put in some good rides against strong competition. Consistency was our friend for the overall! Graeme has been a strong partner and besides, it’s always good to inflict a bit of pain on the father-in-law! Also, a big thank you to all of the clubs and volunteers who come out each week to enable us to race and support the sport we all love. It wouldn't be possible without them and every evening racing has been well organised and most importantly friendly and inclusive. We look forward to the last round and hope to go out on a high”!

Halford and Bond made it a Wrekinsport sandwich for the podium positions, agonisingly missing out on runner-up spot by a single second in another new pairing. Speaking on behalf of the team Bond commented: “I really enjoyed the event and a great experience to ride with Chris. Thankfully my legs felt good. Chris paced us really well and did the majority of work, and the plan was for me to set the pace up Cotwall Bank. Unfortunately I pushed too hard as I was riding without my power meter and gapped Chris for a short period, which also emptied my legs for the finish, so I couldn't help Chris out much in the final couple of miles. A great event though, and we hope to do a few more 2-Ups together next year”.

In the Mixed Team Championship the Series winners were also looking for a victory lap after realising very late that the event was on and arriving almost last minute – never a good plan, reducing warm-up opportunities. The win wasn’t to be thanks to another first-time pairing, with Market Drayton CC pair Sarah Grant and Mark Milton storming around the course in 22:22 – good enough for 4^th spot Overall. Speaking for the team, Grant was delighted with the win, commenting: “A great night all round, I really enjoyed it and so pleased with the result! Brilliant team work and full gas to the finish, thanks to my awesome team mate”!

Serjeant and Hill also had the Ludlow event from the previous evening in their legs but despite the last minute arrival still posted a fine time to take the runners-up spot in 23:39, with Serjeant stating: “Another boiling hot evening, and tired legs from Ludlow the previous evening, but a great course and good banter with the other teams. We finished on exactly the same time as we did on same course in 2019”! Hill added: “It’s just great to be competing with Emma on the 2-Ups. We are well matched, and everyone is so friendly and helpful. It’s a shame that there aren’t many more events in the Series. Thanks Emma, and thanks to all clubs entering the Series and the timekeepers”.

Wrekinsport were running their club 2-Up Championship on handicap within the event, with Angela Boycott and Barry Parsons taking a clear win by 13 seconds in an adjusted 19:34 from Halford and Bond.

The winning margin could not have been closer in Round 13 of the SB Sports Injuries Series as Adam Baker ended up ousting the Series leader by one second in Wrekinsport CC's Gordon Davies 19, held over two laps of the Shawbirch – Cotwall Bank circuit. Despite losing 10 seconds to Dean Callister on the second lap Adam Baker clung on for a maiden win in 41 minutes 44 seconds having battled through a sapping northerly headwind that affected the three mile stretch between Shawbirch island an Crudgington crossroads. Baker was pleased with his win, commenting: “It was extremely close for the win, especially over that distance, any number of things where a second is made and lost. It was a tough day with the wind, but I paced it very well, pushing hard into the headwind and then using the tail wind to recover while keeping the speed high. The sections down wind were certainly more enjoyable - happy with my first win at these events”.

Callister stretched his lead at the top of the Overall standings to 12 points after an extremely close battle with the rider in runner-up spot Henri Bedford. The two were split by 10 seconds at the en of the first lap and by exactly the same margin at the end of the second, with Callister stopping the watch on 41:45. The Nova Raider's comments show the difficulty judging a course that provides a variety of challenges, stating: “A nice temperature for racing but a strong wind in places. I always find that course hard to pace, and missed the win by such a small margin, but a great ride and congratulations to Adam Baker - thanks to Wrekinsport for a top evening”.

Bedford had had other plans for the evening, looking to enter the re-arranged North Shropshire Wheelers' 25 due unavoidably to take place at the same time, but a late cancellation saw a hasty revision to his plans, making the transfer just in time. Whilst he cemented his Silver medal position Overall he became the first medal winner of the Series taking Junior Gold with four Rounds to spare after a fabulous season. He stated: “I love the Wrekinsport course as I am very familiar with it. A big headwind made the first part of the course tough and challenging. I enjoyed the race a lot, and well done to all those who competed - thanks to Wrekinsport CC for hosting”. With a healthy contingent of five Juniors among the 28-strong field Bedford's nearest challenger was 16 year-old Bridgnorth CC rider Nathan Fullwood in 46:42.   

Another of the riders caught on the hop by the late cancellation took the win in the SB Women's Series as Marie Llewellyn extended her lead at the top of the standings. Nova Raider Llewellyn crossed the finish line in 50:29 to see off a challenge from Wrekinsport's Clare Cotterill who occupies the Silver medal position after ending her evening on 58:52. Her arrival after the event had started meant she had less than ideal race preparation, as she explained: “The 25 had been the plan for the night, but after the cancellation a very quick drive and entry online for the Wrekinsport 19. The first five kilometres was the warm up as nothing wanted to work, and then I found my power and pace and had an enjoyable race. Many thanks for Wrekinsport for letting us and others join last minute”.

In the SB Veterans Championship it was a surprise win for Wrekinsport's Chris Halford, still recovering from a knee operation but pushing out Bridgnorth CC's Jonathan Mills-Keeling, another of the late transferees by 8 seconds in +7:53. Halford was 20 seconds behind Mills-Keeling at the end of the first lap but finished strongly, as his comments reveal: “I went easy on the first lap, and pushed a little on the second. I'm surprised to of won the Veteran's race with such strong riders racing”.

Wrekinsport were running their Gordon Davies Handicap within the event, with Stephen Porter-Knott taking Gold in an adjusted 35:26, with Ian Bond Silver in 39:23 and Ben Wood Bronze in 40:47.
