Competitors were sweating on mobile road works being lifted in time for the opening event of the Shropshire Time Trialling season as things got underway on a windy day that had a marked effect on riders in Round 1 of the Friction Hydraulics Series, Wrekinsport CCs Chris Edwards Hilly 18 on the Worfield triangle. Fortunately the event ran as normal as the works at Swancote finished in time to save the event having to run short distance.

Reigning Friction Series champion Tim Beardmore signalled his intentions to set out a strong defence of that title with a win in a fine time of 40 minutes 59 seconds – but like all competitors he suffered on a gruelling opening leg to Sutton Maddock which sapped the strength thanks to a roaring headwind that significantly hampered progress and took character to fight through. However after the turn things varied between fast and scary as that wind played a huge part in proceedings. The Bridgnorth CC rider commented: “It’s great to be back racing on one of my favourite courses. Typical windy conditions made for a tough out leg to Sutton Maddock, followed by an extremely fast run in to Bridgnorth. The climbs went well, but there were some horrible cross winds to deal with in places. I felt good on the bike and was pleased with my time. I’m very happy to take the overall win, thanks to all at Wrekinsport for organising. Shame more people didn’t race it”. Beardmore’s final comment reflected an unusually low entry, potentially due to rising fuel costs, the simply miserable February weather which had seen part of this course underwater just a week before with pre-entry required, or fears over the removal of Covid restrictions which affected two riders.

With non-SCCA rider Thomas Bill of Stafford Triathlon Club pushing Beardmore hard, finishing just three seconds down, Wrekinsport CC’s Tomos Hales came closest of the County riders in 41:10, bettering his race-winning time from the 2021 event by 34 seconds to retain the promoting club’s Chris Edwards Shield. Hales is another fan of this testing circuit and was grateful things remained dry: “We had some good weather for the first and my favourite time trial of the year, apart from the northerly wind. New tarmac was fast down into Bridgnorth, and I felt good going up The Hermitage. Well done to Tim for a cracking time around the course. Thanks for the time keepers and marshals”.

Beardmore also won the Veteran’s competition, defending his Friction Veteran’s Championship status with a fine effort of +7:39, +2:03 ahead of team mate Jonathan Mills-Keeling, whose post-race comments show both the surprise wake up call the event provided, with hilly early season races the perfect way to get into shape quickly; as well as the strange sense of being back to normality so missing from life for two years: “I enjoyed it, although it was quite a shock to the system. Thanks to all involved and it was great to have cake at the HQ”!

The Women’s competition was affected by Covid with two riders having to pull out, leaving Wrekinsport’s Victoria Doran with a first taste of the fearsome Hermitage as she got around in 1:02:09. She stated: “Well you’ve got to be in it to win it I suppose! It was a tough course, but I enjoyed it. I certainly learned a lot too and there’s room for improvement next time I have a go at it”.

The final race of the 2021 time trialling season is usually the first, but Covid-19 restrictions meant the curtains came down instead on a glorious October afternoon in a low key close. With many riders already having packed their time trial bikes away until 2022 those who entered Wrekinsport’s Chris Edwards Hilly 18 at Worfield enjoyed probably the best weather the event has ever offered as the Friction Hydraulic Series had four outstanding medals resolved in Round 19. Starting at Stableford crossroads, riders are immediately faced with a stiff climb – but that’s nothing to the fearsome climb of The Hermitage 10 miles in which ramps up to 15% near the top and opens the lungs.

Won overall by Solihull CC's Dave Fellows in a fine time of 38 minutes 2 seconds, best placed of the County riders was Wrekinsport’s Tomos Hales – leading home a curious series of riders all worried about nursing their bikes around the course. Hales won his club’s Chris Edwards Trophy with a good effort of 41:44, having runner-up Henri Bedford in his sights for much of the race as a carrot. Hales however didn’t wish to change his giant front ring and was sweating on losing significant time up The Hermitage, even at one point pre-race considering changeing bikes at the foot of the climb, but in the end he managed to maul himself up, as he explained: “I was delighted to take the County win. It was a great day for it, making a nice change to it being in early Spring. Henri was a good target in the distance but I was more worried about getting up The Hermitage with my 58-25 gearing. Thanks Wrekinsport for organising, and all the marshals and timekeepers”.

Bedford meanwhile had his own problems as his electronic gears started playing up at Sutton Maddock, 3½ miles into the race, meaning he had to alternatively push too big a gear or spin a small one as signals from the gear changer got misinterpreted. In the end he finished County runner-up by nine seconds ahead of Tim Beardmore in an impressive 42:16. He stated: “The last race of the season is always welcomed especially after a long season. Things didn’t go to plan as my Di2 decided it didn’t want to work after the first roundabout. I struggled around the whole course in either a too big gear or too small. I enjoyed it nonetheless despite having Tomos breathing down my neck starting a minute behind - thanks to Wrekinsport CC”.

Beardmore made it three from three with bike issues thanks to an armrest that worked loose even earlier than Bedford’s issue, perhaps exacerbated by the road surface which is far from ideal. The Bridgnorth CC rider had home road advantage however and still posted an impressive 42:25 to take County 3rd which converted to +6:04 giving him the Veteran's runner-up spot. Beardmore explained: “One of my favourite courses, with lovely weather to end the season. The race however did not go according to plan. Two miles my one armrest came loose and almost fell off. I wasn’t sure weather to abandon or not but decided to persevere cautiously and happy to get round in the end. Massive thanks to all Wrekinsport CC for organising”.

The Woman's race could barely have been more competitive as the three entrants were split by just 19 seconds with Silver and Bronze medals in play. Winner was Nova Raiders' Deb Hutson-Lumb who captured Women's Silver on the strength of her 48:05 ride, pushing out Hafren CC's Emma Serjeant by seven seconds for the win and consigning Market Drayton CC’s Alison Dockney to Bronze with a still excellent 48:17. As seems almost inevitable in 2021 Hutson-Lumb also took victory in the Veteran's with a fine +6:26. She stated: “After a delayed start to the season I was really pleased to pick up Silver. I will hopefully have an injury free winter and looking forward to next season. Well done to everyone involved in SCCA racing 2021! Fabulous weather for what is usually a freezing, wet and windy event. Having done no hill work this year climbs felt tougher than usual. It was good to have a very competitive Women’s race with only 19 seconds between the three of us and Alison absolutely smashing the climbs. A great end to the season, and many thanks to everyone involved in making it happen”.

With Bedford long sealing the Friction Junior Series title Wrekinsport CC's Ben Southgate helped himself to Junior Silver one his first attempt at The Hermitage thanks to a 52:35 ride. He stated: “Very happy to receive the medal, improving every day. All that hard work is paying off. I'm really happy considering the road conditions”. That left Junior Bronze to be settled on count back rules with Market Drayton CC’s Harry Corney beating Hafren CC’s Max Bufton by five seconds with the pair tied on points.

A fast and furious Autumn 5 mile event brought the curtain down on Wrekinsport’s club season as the low key closer saw ten riders test themselves on a tight circuit of Long Lane – Shawbirch. Designed around the southern end of the club’s usual 10 mile course, it was brought back into use after many years due to long term road works affecting the first choice circuit near Allscott. The distance is suitable for both flat-out speed merchants and beginners alike, with Phil Roberts taking a maiden win right at the close.

Roberts stopped the watch on 11 minutes 42 seconds in glorious conditions to see off a strong challenge from team mate Adam Mumford by seven seconds, the only two riders to dip below the 12 minute mark. Visibly straining for the line up the slight gradient beyond the former Gate at Bratton pub to the finish line, Roberts was delighted to end the club season on a high.

Best placed of the visiting riders was Paramount CRT’s Chris Riley, ending his evening on 12:12 and pushing out Nova Raiders’ Ben Gilpin by 16 seconds. Indeed it was an evening for Ben’s with four placed from 4th to 7th with Ben Southgate taking Junior honours in 12:33 pushing out Ben Wood by four seconds, and with Bridgnorth CC rider Ben Upton putting in a creditable 13:05 in his first ever time trial.

13 year-old Newport CC Junior Megan Fletcher was the only female in competition, ending her evening on 16:38, whilst club vice-Chairman Dave Poulter kept a continuous 47 record of competing at least one event every season going with 15:03, something he wryly described as his “First and last event of the season; and a top 10 finish to boot”!

The Little Sweetpea Gardens/BBR Opticians Hill Climb Series got off to a flying start on Willomoor Bank despite course record holder Jonny Morris missing out on equalling his own course by 2.56 seconds but taking a familiar winning spot as the season for the shortest but toughest discipline got underway with Wrekinsport CC’s promotion. A still evening saw a fine field of 33 riders tackle the 15% ramp, capable of turning legs to jelly under the watchful eye of boisterous supporters, with Morris taking a clear win by 7.2 seconds to post a great ride of 3 minutes, 27.04 seconds, 0.95 seconds faster than his winning time the previous year. Morris was pleased with his climb, stating: “The Wrekin is always a great way to start the hill climb season. I've learnt how to wrestle my bike over the last ramp, and the tactic seems to work for me! It was great to see both new and old faces enjoying turning themselves inside out! As ever, thanks to all the volunteers”.

Kirk Vickers reigned as Shropshire Hill Climb Champion between 2016 and 2018 and appears to have that title firmly in his sights again as he took the maximum 20 points on offer to affiliated riders to take County honours and Overall runner-up spot with 3:34.24. Visibly straining for the finish line, always a task on the almost flat final 100 metres after the effort of wrangling the body up the most fearsome part of the climb, Vickers’ comments showed the pain of the full out effort required, and echoed Morris’ sentiments about new faces having a go: “My first hill climb, a shock to the system! I paced it well and had a good finish up the steep bit. A good turn out and great to see new riders taking on hill climbs”.

Tomos Hales retained Wrekinsport club hill climb championship, but the improvement in his form was clear to see over 2020 as he elevated himself into third spot overall after slicing 11.3 seconds off last year with a fine effort of 3:47.84. Hales has been on great form on flatter territory this season but showed that he can mix it uphill too. He stated: “I was very happy with my time and to finish just behind such high calibre riders was a confidence boost. I tend to do well on the steep bit of the climb, and do like the Wrekinsport hill climb course. It was made even better by the support on the steep corner - thanks for Wrekinsport for organising and the precise time keeping, it was a lung buster”.

One welcome trend was the presence of six women amongst the field – with the familiar name of multiple Women’s course record holder Rebecca Richardson, a ferociously talented climber with ‘Welsh Hill Climb Champion’ in her palmarès taking the win. Richardson has a soft spot for the Series having begun her glittering hill climb career in 2016 in a County event and showed a clean set of heels to many with a 9th place Overall finish in 4:07.70. She stated: “I was delighted with the win, a difficult climb to pace and I saved it for the last steep ramp! A brilliant turn-out and great to see so many women competing - thank you Wrekinsport CC for organising”.

Taking maximum points amongst the County women was Market Drayton CC’s Alison Dockney, one of the new faces to hill climbing – and on the evidence here she appears to have taken the discipline in her stride. Dockney stopped the watch on 4:43.74 and clearly enjoyed the support from the roadside: “A lovely evening for it, and the atmosphere was amazing, no chance of easing off with all the support on the final ramp. It hurt a lot! Great rides all round; I was really inspired - thanks Wrekinsport”!

In a discipline where weight saving is all Juniors have a natural advantage, with a close battle for Overall honours. Llangollen-based Louis Lermite made the journey worthwhile with a win in 3:49.70, taking 4th spot Overall in the process, He stated: “I really enjoyed the event, it was a fun course with that steep rise at the end. Pacing was hard, and I went too hard at the beginning then just tried to hold on to the end - thanks to all the organisers”. Lermite’s comments show the trouble judging this climb, with the gradient changing frequently making getting into a rhythm tricky. This was echoed in the post-race comments of County Junior winner Jack Young, with the Oswestry Paragon rider taking a strong 5th Overall in 3:53.45. He commented: “It’s quite a nice climb; I liked the steep bit at the end! It’s quite undulating at the start which was quite hard to pace, but it wasn’t too bad”.
